16 Public Speaking Delivery Tips: Moving from Bad Public Speaking To Good

Few people realize the importance of public speaking. They are always trying to avoid public speaking opportunities.

Instead of trying to avoid, we should try and improve our speech skills, learn how to get rid of public speaking fears and anxiety, learn some useful public speaking delivery tips and mark out a strategy, etc.

Those who try to avoid speaking in public, are letting go of very useful and excellent opportunities to improve themselves, their careers or business, get their ideas across to many people and earn handsomely. Famous public speakers can earn in thousands

The main aim of public speaking would be to get your message across to the audience and make them 'interested in what you want to say.'

One of the best ways to make the audience interested is to focus each of your speech to address some of the problem which the audience is facing.

If you are trying to solve a problem for your audience, then anything you say would be of interest to them, wouldn't it? Bad public speaking is where you focus entirely on yourself and not keep the audience's needs in mind.

Here are 16 simple public speaking delivery tips which should enhance your effectiveness while on stage:

1. Tone of voice: How you say something can be more important than what you say. Vary the tone of your voice and avoid monotony otherwise your audience might doze off.

2. Eliminate Umm'ss and Aaah's: While speaking, sometimes you may get stuck and take time to think of what or how to say. At such times, many people may make sounds like Ummmh or Aaah etc.

This kind of thing may make you look stupid. Avoid doing it as it is a bad public speaking practice.

Instead of that remain silent for a few moments while trying to come up with something to say. Silent pauses are better than making such sounds.

3. Pace: Nervousness and public speaking go hand in hand. If you are nervous, you may tend to speak fast.

It is important to speak slowly and clearly. If your words are not clear, then its very difficult to make any sort of good impression on the audience.

4. Volume: The volume of your voice is also very important. It should not be too high so that it looks as if you are shouting, nor should it be so low that the people have difficulty in hearing
you.

5. Get to the point quickly: While giving speech, it is better if you get to the point you want to make quickly and not beat around the bush for long.

You don't need to tell the audience everything you know about a subject, but only of what they need to know. Try to pick out only the most relevant and best information to give to your audience.

Studies have shown that the people remember very few facts that were conveyed during the speech anyway. So stay with the most important information.

6. Pay attention to your arms: Its important that you do not fidget with your arms. Also remember not to put your hands in pocket, nor place them behind the back.

It is preferable to leave the hands comfortably by your sides. They should also move freely so as to allow free and natural-looking gestures.

7. Posture: Keep a relaxed and upright posture while giving speech. Leaning either forward or backward should be avoided. Keep your legs shoulder width apart in order to get good balance.

8. Correcting your mistakes gracefully: If you make a mistake and it is obvious, do not apologize. Just make the necessary correction and carry on with your speech.

9. Preparation: Prepare well for your speech as that can prevent panic. Preparation consists of knowing the audience and knowing the subject.

Know the needs of your audience and match your content accordingly. Also know the subject thoroughly so that you can approach the stage with self-confidence.

10. Calmness: Appear calm and relaxed even if you feel nervous inside. Speak slowly and clearly, put necessary emotions in your voice.

11. Technique to make yourself be heard by everyone in the room: Speak to the person farthest away from you so that you voice can be heard clearly by everybody. See how nicely this technique works.

12. Conviction: Speak with conviction as if you really believe in whatever you are saying (as you should, otherwise why are you saying it). The conviction should reflect in your voice, tone and gestures.

13. Pauses: Pause at times during your speech to allow yourself and the audience time to reflect and think. Do not just rush through the presentation leaving everyone out of breath.

14. Attention grabbing: Attention spans of audience can be short. So every few minutes you should try and catch their attention by doing things like fluctuating your voice, telling an anecdote, moving around the room, asking them a question etc.

Think of ways you can catch the faltering attention of the audience again.

15. Slowing down at important junctures: Slow down for important points in order to emphasize them. Important points should be given special emphasis. Slowing down your pace can provide that.

16. Have fun. It all boils down to how much fun you had on the stage, how much relaxed you felt while giving the speech, and how much did the audience it. Try to control your nerves if you want to make a huge impact with public speaking.

If you are relaxed and enjoying every moment of your speech, it will most likely be enjoyable for the audience as well.

Conclusion:
The above tips should prove useful to you in giving a good presentation or speech on the stage.
All these tips should help you develop your own strategy. These are high impact public speaking strategies which most top public speakers adopt (either consciously or by habit).

Improving vocabulary skill: Vocabulary building activity

Having a good vocabulary is very important as it assists in communicating your ideas properly. If you want to write or speak well then you have to concentrate on increasing vocabulary. The more command you have over words, the better can be your writing or speech.

It is recommended to focus on and devote some time regularly to expand your vocabulary. Here are just a few ways you can increase your vocabulary:

1. If you are unsure of any word, you encounter while reading or speaking to someone, refer the dictionary. Constantly referring the dictionary is a good habit.

2. Read extensively. Read a lot and whenever you come up with any word you are not familiar with, look up its meaning in the dictionary. Its advice-able to do this for every new word you encounter, even if you have to do this for 20 words per page. You may write down the meanings near the words in the book itself with a pencil.

3. While looking up a word in the dictionary, also see its pronunciation and proper usage with the help of an example sentence. Most good dictionaries do provide an example or two for each word.

4. Also look up the synonyms and antonyms for the word. By noting down the synonyms you can expand your vocabulary further and it also helps to avoid repeating the same word while speaking or writing as you can include its alternatives if you have to say the word more than once in a sentence or paragraph.

5. Crossword puzzles, scrabble and other word games can be helpful for increasing your vocabulary.

Nervousness and Public Speaking - Are you feeling anxious about an upcoming speech?

Are you feeling anxious about a speech you have to make? Do you want to learn how to get rid of public speaking fears that are haunting you?

Here are a few simple tips to help you handle your anxiety and prepare well for your speech or presentation:

Tip #1:
Rehearse in front of a mirror - rehearse your body language, facial expressions, gestures, voice tone, speech delivery etc. before your presentation. By watching yourself in mirror you can know what you are doing wrong and can change that. Keep rehearsing in this fashion till you are satisfied with your performance. You may feel that you do not feel that much afraid now to walk up to the stage.

Tip #2:
Speak to one person at a time. While giving the speech, focus on one individual at a time. Look at different people during your speech, but at any given time just focus on one particular person giving him/her all your attention and imagine you are having a one-to-one conversation with just that person. You may find that you do not feel the nervousness that you would have otherwise felt if you delivered the speech with the mindset of speaking to the whole audience instead of just one person at a time.

Tip #3:
Remeber to take a deep breaths every now and then. Deep breathing helps you relax, so practise deep breathing just before starting your speech and also ocasionally during it. Relax your tense muscles and keep your face relaxed because the face leads the way for the whole body. If your face is relaxed your whole body tends to follow suit. On the other hand if your face is tense and has a frown, you will feel more tension in your whole body.

Speech Delivery Tips - 10 Tips For Giving A Good Speech

Does the thought of making a speech in classroom or making a business presentation make you nervous? You are not alone, many people have stage fright.

In order to help you, I have compiled a small list of 10 speech delivery tips so that you can put up a good performance.

1. While practicing your speech at home, practice it out aloud, preferably in front of a mirror. Notice your body posture, your facial expressions and your tone of voice while practicing the speech. You may also use a recording device to record and listen how you sound.

Practicing in front of mirror can be an excellent way of preparing for speech delivery for an upcoming event.

2. Know your topic well. It helps to know your subject as much as possible and prepare thoroughly. Knowing your subject thoroughly can add to your confidence levels.

3. On the morning of your speech, avoid carbonated drinks as they may dry up your mouth.

4. Once you stand on stage take some time to relax and gather your thoughts. Do not be afraid of pausing momentarily during your speech if required. Remember you do not have to speak continuously without stopping, you can very well afford brief moments of silence in order to organize your thoughts and continue.

5. Reduce fear of the audience. You can do this by realizing that usually the audience will be on your side. They want you to do well and want to hear what you have got to say. There may be a few mischief-makers in the audience, but most of them are not likely to be so. So it is best to ignore the mischief-makers.

Think that you are talking to your friends. Having a positive and friendly perception of the audience can increase your confidence levels. Talk to your audience as if you are talking to a group of friends or to guests at a party.

6. While starting to speak if you notice that you voice is shaky, take a pause. Clear your throat, drink some water and take deep breaths to cool down your nerves. Use of voice in speech delivery plays a very important role. So try to speak in a calm and composed manner. Speak slowly and clearly.

7. Focus on someone sitting at back of the room, this might have a calming effect on some speakers.

8. Pretending that you are a professional on TV or Radio can sometimes help.

9. If people ask you questions and you do not know the answer to some of those questions, do not be afraid to acknowledge so. You do not have to know all things.

10. Have a good ending statement prepared in advance. While writing down the speech, make sure you have written a good ending statement so that you do not end with an awkward silence or say something like " I guess this is the end of my speech".

Its not necessary that the ending statement is a dramatic one, even a simple well-thought out statement should do the job.

Just Do It

This post is about how to overcome fears and panic by implementing the Nike strategy. In my previous post, I had mentioned details about how we can overcome fears by educating ourselves. You can read that post here, it is a very useful one.

Another very effective method of overcoming fear is to feel the fear and still do the task anyway. The important thing here is not to try and overcome this fear you are feeling, but get up inspite of the fear and do it. Do not keep high expectations from yourself initially.

If you have fear of public speaking, still try to go on stage and deliver the speech. Do not have over-expectations from yourself that you will deliver a great spell-bounding speech. Just focus on going on the stage and saying something and getting the task done. Do not worry about whether you will be good or bad.

Just going on stage a few times and speaking would help in reducing your fears, then you can concentrate on improving your public speaking. Initially the trick is to try and get the thing done no matter how you do it. In this way you will not be overly worried about your performance, which can prove to be helpful in making you feel a lot more relaxed.

It is important to remember the following points for overcoming fears:

1. When you feel afraid of doing something, feel the fear and still do it anyway.
2. Do not worry about how you do it, just get the task done even if you do not do it properly.

Becoming a Better Public Speaker

In this post, let us discuss how we can become a better speaker by eliminating verbal pauses from our speech. Verbal pauses refer to the umm.., aahh’s… that we say when we struggle to find something intelligent to say in our speech. This can happen with the best of us, such kind of verbal pauses make us seem unintelligent to our audience. So effort must be made to eliminate verbal pauses from your speech.

The first step is to become aware of this behaviour. You can watch how other people speak and notice whether they speak without any verbal pauses. Next you can notice your own speech, or ask others to observe you while you speak and let you know of the frequency of verbal pauses during your speech.

Becoming aware of your tendency will help you make efforts in overcoming this habit. After you have become aware, the next step would be replace this habit with another better one. So what would you replace this habit with?

Instead of verbal pauses, make your pauses silent. Instead of saying umm or aah, just remain silent for brief moment until you come up with something intelligent to say. Remember you do not have to keep on speaking during your speech, you can afford brief moments of silence without the need to fill up with any sounds.

Hope this article would help you to become aware of your verbal pauses, and replace them with silent pauses which should make you a better speaker atleast by some degree. For mastering public speaking, click here

Overcoming Fears

One of the best ways to overcome fear is to learn more about it, get knowledge about the thing that we fear. That will help in reducing the fear because once we have good knowledge about a particular thing, we become comfortable doing it and the fear begins to fade away.

Many people are afraid of public speaking because it involves a lot of skills like preparing a good speech, delivery of the speech, how to address the audience, body language, tone of voice etc. Since many people have not mastered these skills, public speaking involves a lot of uncertainties to them and they are afraid of walking up to the stage as they fear that they may make complete fools of themselves.

One way to overcome this fear is to study in detail the various skills involved one by one, such as they should study about the basics of body language, how to maintain a confident and correct posture, they should study and master effective speech preparation and delivery. Once they master the various skills involved in public speaking, they will feel a lot more comfortable and eventually they fear is likely to vanish into the thin air. (Check this out if you want to master public speaking skills - click here

This is because they have step by step mastered and become comfortable with various smaller skills that are needed for giving a good speech or presentation on stage. They have divided the task of public speaking into smaller pieces, then studied and mastered each piece until they became perfect in it or atleast became comfortable in it.

If you observe people who are good at something or have successfully overcome a fear of something, you are likely to find that they took the time to learn how to do it until they mastered it. They broke the task down into smaller chunks and mastered the individual chunks.

This is a systematic approach of overcoming fear as you are taking small steps at a time and getting comfortable with them, you are confronting your fear in small steps.
This is the key to overcome fear - to handle it in smaller chunks and not all at once.

Uncertainty is likely to give rise to fear, while knowledge kills it. So arm yourself with knowledge about anything which you are afraid of. Break the task into smaller components and take the time to learn those various components. You will then no longer be uncertain or unsure about the things you fear, you will now possess the knowledge of it which will help in making the fear go away.

If you are good at something, it is unlikely you will feel afraid of doing it, on the contrary you will feel confident and comfortable in doing that thing. So in order to master fear, make a commitment to study and master whatever it is that you fear. Break the object of your fear into smaller parts and deal with each part one at a time till you have mastered it, then move on to another part. If you are afraid of public speaking, break it down into different parts, study each part, arm yourself with knowledge of that, practise it till you become perfect then move on to the next part. If you keep doing a thing repeatedly you will not fear it, because you have learned from doing it repeatedly, you have become comfortable with it.

So here is the summary of this article - Educate yourself in order to remove fear. Study the various aspects of your fear by breaking it down into smaller parts, and master each part till you feel comfortable.

You can also learn how to handle your fears and overcome panic to fast-track your way to overcoming these difficult barriers to your success. Check this widely acclaimed course - Eliminate panic and anxiety
