Easy Tips to Prevent Headaches:

Now whatever is the cause or nature of your headache, most headaches are preventable.

Follow the tips given below and you will be amazed to find that the prevention is actually in your hands.

Tips to Prevent Headaches:
==========================

1.
Do not read when you are lying down. The lying down posture is clearly not the best position to read. It is a very common thing for a person to flop down on the bed with a book and read it while lying down. In fact, many people make it a habit to read for a few minutes before going to sleep.

2. While reading, do not hold the book too close to your eyes. This is some thing that happens when you lie down to read. The book tends to move closer to your eyes than intended. Your eye muscles have to strain a lot in order to focus on nearer objects. The book should ideally be at the level of your chest.

Do not hold it too far away either. Holding the book too far away is just as bad as holding the book too close.

3. Eat plenty of carrots; they are good for your eyes. Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which is the vitamin required for proper eye sight.

4. If you feel that your eyes are under strain, take a break. The best relaxation for your eyes is staring at a distant object or just keeping them closed. Your eyes will give you signs when they are under strain. You will find that you are getting tired sooner, your eyes may start to water or you might notice that you have to squint your eyes in order to get a better view.

5. Try to blink deliberately while working on the computer. When you work on the computer there is an increased tendency to stare unblinkingly at the monitor. This especially true if you are playing an exciting game. In such cases you should make a conscious effort to blink your eyes.

If you do not blink your eyes, they will become dry, they will hurt and this will ultimately precipitate as a headache. It is when you blink that your eyelids wash your eyeballs with the tear secretions. Your eyeballs must be moist always so remember to blink your eyes even if you are deeply engrossed in something interesting.

6. Breathing exercises help you breathe better and release the toxins in your brain. The human body takes in a lot of toxic substances, both through the air and through food and drink. Apart from this, various toxins are also released in the body as a result of the various processes that are going on. These toxins have to be released on a continuous basis or else they will accumulate in the body with serious results.

One of the best ways of releasing these toxins is by means of exhaling while breathing. One funny fact is that most of do not breathe properly. With each breath that we take, we take in oxygen. This oxygen is carried by the blood to every cell of the body and every cell must indeed get enough oxygen not just to survive but to remain healthy as well. So it is imperative that we make an honest attempt to breathe properly. But first of course we have to make sure that we are breathing in unpolluted air. The time best for breathing exercises is early in the morning when the air is comparatively unpolluted.

7. Try to get a good night’s sleep. A good night’s sleep is very important to keep away headaches.

"Sleep is one of the most basic and universal activities in which we all engage. Yet, getting to sleep, staying asleep, and waking refreshed can be highly elusive to most of us some of the time, and many of us all of the time.”

8. Do not oversleep. Oversleeping is just as bad as not getting enough sleep. If you sleep too much or for too long you will wake up with a very woozy feeling and that will most likely turn into a headache. Our body tells us when it has had enough sleep. Listen to the cue and get up, do not succumb to the temptation to just lay in bed.

9. Each time you get a headache do not reach for your aspirin. Some headaches go by themselves. Do not make you body dependent on aspirin.

Try massaging your temples. Massaging your temples gently stimulates the circulation of blood and relaxes the muscles of the forehead and temples. This itself soothes a person and provide relief from a headache.

10. Too much noise is bad for you. In fact sound pollution is one of the causes for headaches to become so prevalent.Contrary to popular belief, sound pollution is not cause just by machines and automobiles, but apart from that blaring music too does a lot of harm.

11. Stay away from sedatives. Sedatives are not a solution to your sleep problems. Many of them are addictive and their medicine will eventually stop working for you.

Sedatives also affect the time that you wake up. You might get a good night’s sleep when you take sedatives, but the chances are rare that you will wake up refreshed.

12. Try steam inhalation. This is especially true for those who have a sinus problem. Steam inhalation is an excellent way of clearing all the spaces inside. If you have an infection too, a steam inhalation can be very soothing.

But there is a word of caution that I have to offer here. Be very careful about you eyes. Remember that it is not advisable to expose your eyes to steam and so take care to protect your eyes when you are inhaling steam.

13. Eye exercises are good for you and they can help in preventing headaches too. Below you can find tips on how to exercise your eyes.

1. Stare straight ahead of you preferably at a distant object.

2. Close your eyes and let any glimmers of light fade away.

3. Now open your eyes and move your eye balls to the extreme top of your eye

sockets and keep them there for a few seconds.

4. Now move them down to the extreme bottom and keep them there for a few

seconds.

5. Next, move them to the extreme left.

6. Then bring them to the extreme right.

7. Finally bring them towards your nose.

8. Repeat this exercise three or four times a day.

14. This is a very simple step: Breathe plenty of fresh air.

15. Avoid irritating people. Anger and irritation are major causes of headaches.

16. Stretch your self every now and then. Never let cramps set in. If you feel that you have been in a position for too long, get and stretch yourself. Rub your hands and feet and the muscles of your neck to boost up the circulation.

17. Take a 20 minute power nap during your lunch break. You will wake up refreshed.

Flu and Cough Remedies

Flu:

In winter, its a common sight to see people affected by flu - coughing, sneezing and having sore throat. I am providing below some information which may be useful for preparing yourself to face the flu.

Influenza, commonly called as flu is a viral disease which affects the respiratory system.

Difference between flu and common cold:

1. Common cold develops gradually over several days and can start with a scratchy throat, sneezing, which can further lead tocongestion. Whereas, flu generally starts abruptly with headache and other body aches. There may also be feeling of being exhausted and fatigued.

2. The fever accompanying common cold may be mild, while in flu the fever is usually high.

3. The cough in common cold is generally hacking and can be moist because of congestion in the chest. The cough during flu is usually dry and hacking, and can last till all other symptoms of flu havegone.

4. Flu affects the whole body, while common cold may generally affect only the upper body.

Typical Symptoms of flu:

Rapid and intense fever, headache, drycough, sore throat, chills, eye pain, sneezing, running nose, tiredness, depression, weakness, muscle aches fatigues etc. The symptoms generally last for a few days, but sometimes can stretch upto even weeks.

Flu Risks:

Some people have a higher risk of flu complications, like pneumonia. For most people the flu goes away in a week or two, but some can get very sick because of it. Those groups include:

>> babies and kids under age 5

>> people older than 65

>> adults and kids who have health problems, such as diabetes and asthma

>> women who are or will be pregnant during the flu season

Flu Prevention tips:

To prevent flu, we need to keep our immune system strong by eating vegetables, fruits, whole food, drinking plenty ofwater, avoid smoking, alcohol and stress.

If you catch flu, then try the following suggestions:

a. keep warm,

b. lots of bed rest in a well ventilated room,

c. consume warm fluids like chicken soup, or other soups etc.

d. drink plenty of water,

e. take foods that boost your immune system like Vitamin C,vitamin E, grape extracts, echinacea etc.

f. Gargle with salt water to temporarily relieve a sore or scratchy throat. (1/2 teaspoon of saltwater with an 8-ounce glass of warm water).

>>The best way is to keep yourself healthy so that it is easy to avoid colds and the flu in the first place.

>> Make a serious effort to manage stress because stress lowers your immunity making you more prone to diseases and illness.

Cough:

Cough is the sudden expulsion of air from the lungs. Coughing usually means there is something in the respiratory passages that should not be there. This can be caused by breathing in dust particles in the air or when a piece of food goes down the wrong way.

When a person coughs, there is a short intake of breath and the larynx closes momentarily. The abdominal and chest muscles used for breathing contract, which in turn increases the pressure needed to drive air out the lungs when the larynx re-opens.

The resulting blast of air comes out at high speed, scrubbing and clearing the airway of dust, dirt or excessive secretions. Coughing is a common symptom when the airways are 'tight', as in asthma.

The cough reflex is a vital part of the body's defence mechanisms. Normally, the lungs and the lower respiratory passages are sterile. If dust or dirt get into the lungs, they could become a breeding ground for bacteria and cause pneumonia or infection in the breathing tubes.

Cough is of two types : wet cough and dry cough.
Wet cough helps in bringing up mucus while dry cough is caused due to irritation in pharynx.

Causes of Cough:

There could be various reasons for cough like:

>> Weather changes can cause cough,

>> Cough can be caused by inflammation of larynx or pharynx due to bacterial infection

>> It could be caused by irritation due to smoke, dust, chemical fumes etc.

>>Ashtma

>> Smoking

>> Common cold or flu is one of the most common causes of cough

>> In worst cases, a tumor can also cause irritation of lungs lining and cause cough.

If cough produces mucus of green or yellow color then it can be an indication of bacterial infection.

Caution: If cough produces with even a slight red color then it may indicate bleeding and in this case the lungs should be diagnosed as soon as possible.

Some Easy Home Treatments for Cough:
==================================

1. Grape Juice, if taken with honey can be very good for getting rid of cough.

2. Fill one cut lemon with black pepper powder and salt, then suck it to reduce cough.

3. Almonds are very good for dry cough. Soak them in water for some time, then make a fine paste with 20 gram of butter and sugar after removing the brown skin from the almonds. Take this paste twice a day - once in morning and once in evening.

4. Spinach juice can be effective for dry cough. It can be diluted with water. It may be helpful to gargle the mouth with warm spinach juice.

5. Basil(tulsi), mixed with aniseed (saunf) and black pepper should be taken 2-3 times in a day.

6. Drink warm carrot juice, it may provide relief from cough and improve the general health of the patient.

When should you call the doctor?

If you had cough for more than 3-5 days, it may be chronic. Chronic means that this may last for a long time.

The following can help you decide if you need to see your doctor:

>>> If you are coughing blood,

>>> If you are wheezing (making up a whistling sound while breathing in),

>>> Have a high temperature along with cough,

>>> If you frequently face this problem of coughing every few days.

Smoking and Cough:

Smoking may cause cough that does not go away easily. In such cases you need to stop smoking. Various methods to help you quit smoking are: nicotine patches, gum, nasal spray etc. You can seek professional help to quit this habit.

Develop Interest in Subjects Which You Currently Hate and Score Better Grades: 2 Tips to Help You.

Many students are not interested in the subjects they study, and have to force themselves. This article provides some tips to generate interest in any subject so that you can study it better and score better grades.

"I can't get interested in Mediaeval History."

This illustrates a kind of complaint frequently made by college students. Can interest be developed in an "uninteresting" subject; and if so then how??

A growing feeling of pleasure is the sign which notifies us that we are growing interested in a subject. And it is such an aid in the performance of work that we should seek earnestly to acquire it in connection with any work we have to do.

We acquire most of our interests in the course of our experience. Since interests are largely products of experience, then, it follows that if we wish to have an interest in a given subject, we must consciously and purposefully develop it. There is wide choice open to us. We may develop interest in social theory, prize−fight promoting, lignitic rocks, mediaeval history etc.

Do not assume that the development of interest is an easy matter. It requires adherence to certain definite psychological laws which we may call the laws of interest.

The first law may be stated as follows:

1. In order to develop interest in a subject, secure information about it . The force of this law will be apparent as soon as we analyze one of our already−developed interests.

The relation of information to interest can be illustrated by the case of the typical university professor or scientist. He is interested in certain objects of research−−infusoria, electrons, plant ecology,−−because he knows so much about them. He was not always interested in the specific, obscure field, but by saturating himself in facts about it, he has developed an interest in it amounting to passionate absorption.

Let us demonstrate the application of the law again showing how interest may be developed in a specific college subject.

Let us choose one that is generally regarded as so "difficult" and "abstract" that not many people are interested in it−− philology, the study of language as a science. Let us imagine that we are trying to interest a student of law in this. As a first step we shall select some legal term and show what philology can tell about it. As student gathers some basic knowledge of the subject, you may find some students becoming interested in exploring the subject further.

2. There is still another psychological law of interest: In order to develop interest in a subject, exert activity toward it. We see the force of this law when we observe a man in the process of developing an interest in golf. At the start he may have no interest in it whatever; he may even deride it. Yielding to the importunities of his friends, however, he takes his stick in hand and samples the game.

Then he begins to relent; admits that perhaps there may be something interesting about the game after all. As he practises with greater frequency he begins to develop a warmer and still warmer interest until finally he thinks of little else; neglecting social and professional obligations and boring his friends with recitals of golfing incidents.

The methods by which the new−fledged golfer develops an interest in golf will apply with equal effectiveness in the case of a student. In trying to become interested in Mediaeval History, keep actively engaged in it.

Read book after book dealing with the subject. Apply it to your studies in Political Economy, English, and American History. Choose sub−topics in Mediaeval History as the subjects for themes in English composition courses. Try to help some other student in the class. Take part in class discussions and talk informally with the instructor outside of the classroom. Use your ingenuity to devise methods of keeping active toward the subject.

It will readily be noticed that the two laws of interest here set forth are closely interrelated. One can hardly seek information about a subject without exerting activity toward it; conversely, one cannot maintain activity on behalf of a subject without at the same time acquiring information about it.

These two easily−remembered and easily−applied rules of study will go far toward solving some of the most trying conditions of student life. Memorize them, apply them, and you will find yourself in possession of a power which will stay with you long after you quit college walls; one which you may apply with profit in many different situations of life.

In concluding this discussion we should note the wide difference between the quality of study which is done with interest and that done without it. Under the latter condition the student is a slave, a drudge; under the former, he can be a genius. Touched by the spark he sees new significance in every page, in every line. So try to develop as much interest as possible in the subjects you are studying. Your interest can make a lot of difference in your level of performance in that subject.

If you want to be an excellent student and want to get higher grades, then you probably realize the importance of good trained memory. Stop Bleeding in 15 seconds

Researchers seem to have found an amazing liquid that can stop bleeding in 15 seconds!!!

Uncontrolled loss of blood can lead to loss of life. But now researchers at Massachusetts Institue of Technology and University of Hong Kong have found a liquid that may help in stopping bleeding anywhere in body within 15 seconds.

The researchers published their findings in the journal "Nanomedicine. This research was published in the October 10, 2006 online edition of the journal "Nanomedicine".
They explained how they tested the liquid on wounds in various parts of hamsters and rats -- brain, spinal cord, liver, intestine and skin. Each time, the wound stopped bleeding in about 15 seconds.

According to a researcher, this liquid looks like water, and you can put it anywhere there is a cut or bleeding, and it stops the bleeding without a clot. Researchers are confident that this liquid can be very important in emergency medical situations because of the speed of its action. It may also help in reducing infections.

Ellis-Behnke, from MIT adds that when you wipe away the liquid, bleeding resumes, but if you reapply the liquid it stops.

The researchers may have discovered the liquid by accident and still studying its mechanism. You can view pictures and videos of it by going to this link:

Get Rid of Negative Self-Images

What is self-esteem?
Self-esteem is the opinion we have of ourselves. This opinion can be good or bad and is usually influenced by many factors such as our previous experiences in life, other people's opinion about us etc. People with high self-esteem have good opinion of themselves whereas people with low self-esteem have poor opinion about themselves.

What is self-image? Self image is the image or picture in our mind that we have formed about ourselves. This picture or image can be a positive one or a negative one. Negative self-images can give rise to negative thinking.

The difference between self-esteem and self-image is that the former is just an opinion about ourselves and the latter is an image of ourselves.

If we are afraid of doing any activity, then chances are that we have formed a negative self-image of that activity. For example, suppose somebody has stage fear, then it is likely that the person has negative self-images of himself performing badly on the stage, people laughing and making fun of him etc. These images have a negative impact on the person and make him fearful of going on the stage and facing the people.

Therefore it is important to get rid of negative self-images. But the problem is that it might be very difficult to rid of such negative images. The harder we try, the more difficult it seems to get to banish the negative images from our mind. We have all heard the importance of positive thinking, but the negative self-images make it difficult to maintain positive attitude.

How then, are we going to get rid of negative self-images? Here I am going to present a simple technique for overcoming negative self-image:

This technique is called "Burning The Negative Images". In this technique you imagine burning any negative images you have till they fade away. Let me explain the technique with an example. Suppose, you have stage fear, you might be unconsciously making an image of going on stage and not being able to speak, your legs shivering, people laughing at you.

All these images would make you feel uncomfortable with the idea of walking up to the stage. Make a note of all the negative images that come up when you think of going on stage. Then deal with each image one by one.

Now take the first image, picture it as clearly as possible in your mind. Imagine that image is in the form of a photo or snapshot taken from a camera. Imagine holding that picture in your hand, taking a lighter and burning that image. Imagine as clearly as possible about the fire burning the edges of the negative picture, then after the edges the fire burns the entire picture and turns it into black ash. Then imagine throwing away that ash.

After you do it one time, try to imagine the negative image again. You may see that the image is not as strong and vivid as it was earlier. The negative image and its effect seems to have dimmed in your mind.

Repeat what you did the first time, burn the negative image again and throw away the ashes. Then again try to recall the negative image. If you feel difficulty in recalling the negative image, or the image seems to have dimmed considerably then that means you have been successful in your attempt. You can feel that the image now does not have much effect on you, you do not feel nervous or afraid while recalling that image.

If you still feel a little bit of negative emotion while recalling the image, then burn it a few more times until the image does not have any effect on you. Then move on to the next negative image that you get while thinking about going on stage. Burn that image till it no longer affects you.

keep doing this with all the images that you get. Soon you may find that you no longer fear walking up to the stage and giving the much dreaded speech.

Initially you may find that there are a lot of negative images associated with your fear and dealing with all of them may seem to be a very difficult task, but believe me this should not be as difficult as it seems and if you persist then very soon you may rid yourself easily of your lifelong phobia.Try it on any fear, phobia or any area of your life where you do not feel comfortable doing something.

Easy Technique To Learn Any Subject Better

Introduction:

Do you want to know about a technique which can help you in learning things faster and better? You can use the “teaching technique” in order to learn better.

When you read something, or whenever you are trying to learn about any topic or subject, you can get a better grasp of the subject by teaching it to somebody.

The Technique:
Whatever you have read and understood, try teaching it to somebody. This will help to make the subject more clear in your own mind.

For example - suppose you have been reading a chapter in physics - after reading for half an hour, close down the book and then teach what you have learnt to somebody else which will make the subject more clear in your own mind.

Now lets say that you are in the middle of reading some important topic, and you want the topic to be firmly driven in your brain by teaching it to somebody, but the problem is that there is nobody interested to whom you can teach the subject. What would you do in such a scenario - would you go out on the street and catch hold of somebody and force him or her to listen to you??

If there is no one present who is willing to listen to your lecture then instead of teaching to humans you can try teaching to your pet cat, or teach to the door, the curtains, the wall, the book in front of you, or try teaching to your computer screen. Speak out loud on the subject, make gestures as if you are really teaching. You can also imagine that you are a teacher and teaching to a large group of interested students.

Does this all sound very silly to you? Remember that the important thing is not whom you are teaching to, the important thing is to go through the motions of teaching. Keep doing it even though you may find it silly in the beginning.

Advantages of the technique:
What happens when you go through the motions of teaching? Here are the benefits of using this “teaching technique”:

1. You repeat what you have just learnt which helps in remembering the information.

2. You put the information in your own words which will help in clearing up any confusions that you might have on the subject, the subject matter will become more firmly etched in your mind.

3. You will be organising the information you just studied in your head.

4. You may also notice that there are some points which you did not understand as perfectly as you thought you did. You can note down which points you did not fully understand, then re-read about those points to get better understanding.

5. While teaching you may get new thoughts and ideas on the subject. If that happens stop the teaching for a few moments and note down the ideas that have come to you.

So you see, it does not matter whom you are teaching to - whether it is to humans, animals or to the walls of your house - just going through the motions of teaching, trying to explain the subject as clearly as possible in your own words - will help you in grasping the information more firmly and in remembering it.

Alternatives:
If you feel silly or embarrassed doing this technique, you may try the following alternatives :

1. Instead of actually getting up and teaching, just imagine doing it in your mind.

2. Instead of teaching, you can also write down what you have learnt in an organized manner as if you are trying to write a chapter on the subject which you have just studied. This can also help.
