Simple Tips To Have More Energy Everyday

Do you have difficulty waking up in the mornings,
Do you always feel tired?
Do you always complain of fatigue?
Do you wish you had more energy during days?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then you need to increase your energy levels.

The following are some of the advantages of having high energy:
1. Stronger immune system
2. You stay younger longer.
3. The energy tends to increase year after year.
4. You can easily develop a more positive outlook.
5. You develop stronger ability to cope with change.
6. Your body can more easily rid itself of stress and its affects.
7. You can work more, putting in more enthusiasm and using your energy for constructive purposes.
8. You feel lighter and more joyful.
And many more benefits.

Below are given simple tips that may be helpful for increasing your energy and enthusiasm levels.

Tip #1: How to wake up energized in the morning:
If you have trouble waking up in the mornings follow this simple exercise to freshen up which you can do while in bed:

Unroll your ears! Beginning at the top of the ear, gently smooth out the creases. When you get to the earlobe, give it a gentle tug. This simple exercise is a great way to start your morning with plenty of energy!

Tip #2: Almost all your movements throughout the day should begin with your legs and hips.
This can free up energy which could have been otherwise locked. Whether you get up from a chair, sit down, walk, bend down etc. try to start the movement from your legs and hips. If you do this consistently then you would likely feel less exhausted at end of the day.

Tip #3: Know your personal energizers:
Notice things that make you feel relaxed, joyful and energized (any particular job, activity, people, time alone or time with others, certain food etc.) Try to spend more time doing things that energize you.

I am including some examples below to help you in identifying your personal energizers:
Spending time in nature,
Physical movement (walking,running,exercise, etc.)
Being with babies and young children,
Gardening,
Doing anything you enjoy,
Serving others,
Sufficient Sleep,
Water (without adequate water, energy can not flow in your body),
Thoughts of joy and gratitude,
natural scenery,
Other things.

Make a list and then everyday try to include at least one of them (preferably more) in your daily schedule. If you cannot do something then it can help if you just visualize it, for example - if being near an ocean watching the waves has a soothing effect on you but you are not physically near a coastal region, then spend some time visualizing it in detail as if you are really there.

Tip #4. Recognize what drains and depletes your energy and try to spend less time doing those things or if possible avoid them completely. A few things that can drain your energy are:

Trying to meet other's expectations of who you are, stress, hurt, negative emotions, panic and anxiety, negative self talk, anger, physical pain, illness, eating unhealthy food etc.

Tip #5: Instant Energizer:
If you would like an immediate burst of energy at the end of a long and tiring day at office, here is a simple solution to get the much needed energy:
Drink a mixture of grape and lemon juices in equal quantity and watch the feeling of tiredness go away.

The above given tips are simple and practical. Make a habit of following them on a daily basis if you want to see improved results in your life. In addition to the above tips, you also need to have a good night's sleep. For tips on having a good night's sleep, read my articles:

Speech Delivery Tips - 10 Tips For Giving A Good Speech

Does the thought of making a speech in classroom or making a business presentation make you nervous? You are not alone, many people have stage fright.

In order to help you, I have compiled a small list of 10 speech delivery tips so that you can put up a good performance.

1. While practicing your speech at home, practice it out aloud, preferably in front of a mirror. Notice your body posture, your facial expressions and your tone of voice while practicing the speech. You may also use a recording device to record and listen how you sound.

Practicing in front of mirror can be an excellent way of preparing for speech delivery for an upcoming event.

2. Know your topic well. It helps to know your subject as much as possible and prepare thoroughly. Knowing your subject thoroughly can add to your confidence levels.

3. On the morning of your speech, avoid carbonated drinks as they may dry up your mouth.

4. Once you stand on stage take some time to relax and gather your thoughts. Do not be afraid of pausing momentarily during your speech if required. Remember you do not have to speak continuously without stopping, you can very well afford brief moments of silence in order to organize your thoughts and continue.

5. Reduce fear of the audience. You can do this by realizing that usually the audience will be on your side. They want you to do well and want to hear what you have got to say. There may be a few mischief-makers in the audience, but most of them are not likely to be so. So it is best to ignore the mischief-makers.

Think that you are talking to your friends. Having a positive and friendly perception of the audience can increase your confidence levels. Talk to your audience as if you are talking to a group of friends or to guests at a party.

6. While starting to speak if you notice that you voice is shaky, take a pause. Clear your throat, drink some water and take deep breaths to cool down your nerves. Use of voice in speech delivery plays a very important role. So try to speak in a calm and composed manner. Speak slowly and clearly.

7. Focus on someone sitting at back of the room, this might have a calming effect on some speakers.

8. Pretending that you are a professional on TV or Radio can sometimes help.

9. If people ask you questions and you do not know the answer to some of those questions, do not be afraid to acknowledge so. You do not have to know all things.

10. Have a good ending statement prepared in advance. While writing down the speech, make sure you have written a good ending statement so that you do not end with an awkward silence or say something like " I guess this is the end of my speech".

Its not necessary that the ending statement is a dramatic one, even a simple well-thought out statement should do the job.

The Fast Way to Success

Do you want to succeed fast in business, career, studies etc.? In order to succeed fast you need to fail as fast as possible.

You should be willing to try out new things, be willing to stub your feet and not be afraid of making mistakes. If you are afraid of failing, you will not try new things.

So the simple thing to remember if you want to achieve success fast is to fail fast. I am not saying to fail deliberately (infact you have to try and minimize risk as much as possible), but at the same time you have to be mentally prepared for failure. Any worthwile success takes time and effort. You are likely to make a lot of mistakes along the way and have to learn from the mistakes. If you shy away from mistakes and failures, then you are likely to get frustrated and easily give up on your goals.

Now that you know the secret of fast success (the secret is to fail as fast as possible and as many times as required until you can finally achieve success), let us now look at couple of ways you can use to fail fast:

1.Try out new things: Dont be afraid of trying out new ideas and approaches. New things involve a certain factor of risk because you are attempting them for the first time, but don't let that stop you for going ahead.

2. Make things more challenging: You can try making a task a little more difficult and challenging, so that you can learn new things and fast while doing it. Making tasks more challenging can speed up your learning process and help in improving your skills. But dont try to make them too difficult or else you may give them up altogether.

If you liked the above article, then download this free E-book which contains more information on how to succeed faster by failing fast and other useful business ideas. The ebook is available free to download – Click Here.

An Important Tip for Self-Study

A research on students was recently held at Washington University. There were two groups of students participating in the research.

  • 1 group was given 5 minutes to study a text passage and then immediately was given 3 tests on the passage. It was study-test-test-test for them.
  • The 2nd group was given 5 minutes to study the same passage as the first group but were not given the tests. Instead they were asked to study the same passage again for another 5 minutes each time the first group took the test. So the 2nd group studied the passage for a total of 20 minutes. It was study-study-study-study for them.
  • 1 week later both groups were tested again on the text they had studied. The suprising thing is that the first group which studied for just 5 minutes scored remarkably better than the second group remembering 61% of information versus 40% of the second group!!

So the lesson learnt for people who self-study before an important exam is that a large portion of your study time should involve finding and creating ways to test yourselves.

It is recommended to revise what you have studied at least once within the next 24 hours, then again within a week, once more after 15 days and then after a month.

Healthy Sleep Habits- 3 Steps for a good night's sleep

When should you sleep?
Research has shown that the best time to sleep is before midnight, preferably between 10 PM and 6 AM. The body seems to do most of its healing and recovery during this time and it needs you to be asleep in order to accomplish this. Proper Sleep is essential for healthy life.

3 steps for a good night sleep:
1. Allow one hour before bedtime for a relaxing activity. Watching the news or answering e-mails does not count as these are not exactly relaxing activities.

2. If your mind is relaxed but your body is tense, do some low-intensity stretches and exercises to relax your muscles, especially those in your upper body, neck, and shoulders. (Check out Tip#22 from the following post: Tips to Manage Stress

3. Allow at least three hours between dinner and bedtime. The brain does not sleep well on a full stomach. It is advisable to go light on dinner but do not skip it altogether. If you feel hungry while going to sleep, you can try protien rich energy bars.

Cleaning with Vinegar

White Distilled vinegar is very good for cleaning. This maybe the oldest use for vinegar yet (besides as a food). Cleaning with vinegar is much safer than using commercial products.

1. Window Cleaner
A quarter cup in a quart of water makes a good window cleaner. When
you use vinegar in your water to wash windows, dry with newspapers.
Your windows will sparkle! Keep a solution of 50/50 white vinegar and
water in a spray bottle to use for cleaning windows.

2. Dishes
White vinegar mixed with water to rinse off the dishes after washing
them to take the soap off and leave them squeaky clean. This also
takes the soap residue off of your hands at the same time.
Pour 1/4 cup vinegar with dish soap- water must be hot (not boiling
hot). This is great for cleaning your Corningware dishes (it removes all
the stains and grease), cleaning your stainless steel pots and pans
etc., clean your oven and all of stove top (this is better than oven
cleaners. it will remove all of the grease. just dab on and let it set for a
few minutes then wipe clean), and cabinets in kitchen.
Pour 1/4 cup vinegar to your dishwasher rinse cycle for streak free,
sparkling dishes every time!!

3. Carpet Spot and Stain Remover
As a carpet spot and stain remover - take a trigger spray bottle and
fill with one part white vinegar to seven parts water. Take a second
spray bottle and fill with one part white, non-sudsy ammonia and
seven parts water. Saturate stain with vinegar solution. Let dwell for a
few minutes and blot thoroughly with a clean, white cloth. Then go
over the area with the ammonia solution, let dwell and blot again.
Repeat until the stain is gone.

4. Waxing Floor
When waxing a floor after scrubbing with a floor stripper, use 1 cup of
vinegar to rinse water. It neutralizes the chemicals and makes wax or
floor finish adhere better.

5. Oven Cleaner
To keep your freshly-cleaned oven from stinking up your house next
time you bake something, wipe it with white vinegar poured directly on
the sponge as a final rinse. It neutralizes the harsh alkali of oven
cleaners.

6. Furniture Polish
Furniture polish using equal parts of white vinegar and vegetable oil.
Wipe it on and buff with a soft cloth.

7. Microwave
Clean your microwave, use 1 Tablespoon of vinegar, one cup of warm
water and 1 or 2 drops of dish soap in a small microwave safe bowl.
Put it in the microwave on high for 3-4 minutes and let stand for 15
minutes. Then wipe the microwave out with a damp sponge. The
steam and use of vinegar loosens up the build up in the microwave.

8. Cheap Cleaning Solution:
1/3 part white vinegar
1/3 part water
3 drops dishwashing liquid
Mix this into a (recycled) spray bottle and you have the equivalent of
the floor cleaner. Just spray and mop; also great for deodorizing a
room and for a fast cleanup. Use this on any tile floors.

In addition to the above cleaning uses, vinegar can also be very good as a home-remedy for various illnesses like constipation, hair loss, obesity, kidney stones, cholesterol, stiff joints and many more. To find out about the use of vinegar for treatment, click here

7 Tips to Manage Stress At Workplace:

A common complaint nowadays is about too much stress at workplace. I am providing below few tips to help you deal better with stress at your workplace. Hope you find the tips useful, you may also check out my previous post : 22 Tips to Handle Stress (Opens in a new window).

Try these tips to manage stress at your workplace:

1. Take frequent breaks throughout the day. It will help clear your mind and relieve pressure. It can be something as simple as going to the water cooler for a drink or tea.

2. Try pacing your activities. Do more demanding work in the morning, when your energy level is higher, and easier work later in the day, when you may be tired. This way your day can go smoothly.

3. Vary your routine to work. Get to work early sometimes or stay late once a week. You may be able to accomplish more when you vary your routine.

4. Relax the face : The body has an effect on the mind and vice versa. If body is relaxed, the mind also follows suit. And the face leads the way for the body. If the face is tense the musles in other regions of the body too tend to tense up. So whenever you feel stressed, begin by relaxing facial expressions, get rid of the frown and smile more often.

5. If you are in an argument with someone, before you say something which you might regret later get away from the stressor and collect yourself. You can look away for a moment, or put the caller on hold. Use your time-out to take a few deep breaths, stretch, or count to ten.

6. Boosting your vitamin intake can help in dealing better with stress. But try aAvoiding stress formulas, which often contain large amounts of randomly formulated nutrients such as the B vitamins, but little else.

7. Try tea which can be a good stress reducer. Tea contains caffiene is much less quantity compared to coffee. So it should not be harmful to have a few cups of tea per day.

22 Tips to Handle Stress

Try the below given simple tips to handle stress whether at office, home, or any area of your life:

1. Regular moderate exercise can boost energy and reduce feelings of stress. Walking outdoors is a good aerobic exercise for body and mind. You can try out simple exercises like jogging, walking, swimming, biking, aerobics, etc. Exercise releases mood-enhancing chemicals, like endorphins, the mind-body's natural painkiller and mood calmer. Finding an exercise buddy can be even better.

2. Take a warm water bath.

3. Talking it out with a trusted friend or professional

4. List out the problems and list their possible solutions, then try them out.

5.Breathe deeply - slowly in, slowly out and think of something pleasant. Shallow chest breathing can cause your heart to beat faster and your muscles to tense up, increasing feelings of stress. So breathe deeply, begin by putting your hand on your abdomen just below the navel. Inhale slowly through your nose and watch your hand move out as your belly expands. Hold the breath for a few seconds, then exhale slowly. Repeat several times.

6. Keep a day journal. This will help you note down what activities you are doing everyday, how you are utilizing your time and what things cause you stress or anxiety during the day. Once you know what activities are causing stress you can think of ways to deal with them. If you start a journal keep at it atleast for a few days in order to benefit from it.

7. After you've done your best to deal with a situation, avoid speculating about the outcome. Forget it and go onto the next thing.

8. Dont indulge in self-pity and do not try to gain other's sympathy by telling them your woes. Self-pity results in making you feel weaker.

9. Avoid trying to hurry. Always try to be relaxed and composed while doing things.Hurrying results in worry and anxiety. Try to maintain a schedule so that you do not have to hurry for things.

10. If you find a problem or task as too big, then break it down into smaller, more manageable chumps so that you do not feel overwhelmed.

11. Remember that most things that you fear about may not actually happen. What was the thing that worried you the most last year or two years back? Most likely you will not even remember it. The same things can happen to your current fears.

12. Don't try to be perfect. By trying to be perfect in all things you do, you may be creating unnecessary stress in your life. Instead of that, try to do the best that you can in everything you do and if you make a mistake - accept it, forgive yourself and learn from it. Don't be too hard upon yourself and don't overly criticize yourself for making mistakes, instead learn from mistakes and move on.

"Defeat is not the worst of failures. Not to have tried is the true failure."
George E. Woodberry

13. Avoid feeling panicky. It may be natural to feel a little bit of tension and nerves prior to an important meeting, interview, exam etc. but its no use worrying unnecessarily. Worrying too much may prevent your mind from thinking clearly.

14. Resist comparisons with others. Very often the common cause of stress for people is that they compare their own performances against that of other people and if their performance is a little bit inferior, it destroys their confidence and creates stress for them. Instead of comparing yourself with others, make your own previous performance as a standard against which you can set future goals for yourself to achieve. Keep competing with yourself and not with others. Competition with self can lead to improvement and too much competition with others can lead to stress.

15. Sport psychologists have known for a long time that visualizing success can make an enormous difference to the performance of players. However most people do the opposite - instead of focusing on success they visualize and focus on failure. You can minimize stress and build up confidence by focusing on your strengths and what you know rather than focusing on your weaknesses and what you do not know.

"Do not wait; the time will never be 'just right.' Start where you stand, and work with whatever tools you may have at your command, and better tools will be found as you go along."
Napoleon Hill
1883-1970, Author

16.Try looking at problems as opportunities for improving.

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.
Thomas Edison

17. Get plenty of rest and eat well. You'll be able to handle stress better when it does come up.

18. When a particular problem is causing you lots of stress then take a time-out. Do something you enjoy and do not think about the problem. A few minutes away from the problem can help.

19. Give yourself pep talk to cheer yourself up. Sometimes we need to be our own advisor and remind ourselves to keep our cool, accept things that happen to us - whether good or bad and move forward in life. Whenever you feel negative or stressed out you have to make the extra effort in gaining control of yourself. Speaking to yourself in a friendly manner can help - just like when you give a loving advice to a dear friend.

20. Walking in a garden or looking at green trees can have a soothing effect on us. Spend time looking at trees and plants, watching birds or animals, sitting by the seaside watching the waves, enjoy beautiful natural scenery - all these can take our minds off everyday problems and help in gaining calmness. Try being absorbed in nature for sometime everyday. You can also develop gardening as a hobby. Besides feeling calm, out health can also benefit as we get fresh unpolluted air while we are in natural surroundings.

21. Write down on a piece of paper all things that you can think of which are causing you stress. Divide the paper into two parts by drawing a margin in the middle. Then on the left side write down all the things which you can change by putting in some efforts. On the right side write down things which you cannot change, like the death of someone etc. Change what you can and stop worrying about things you can't change.

22. Stretch: Stretching loosens muscles and facilitates deeper breathing, thus it can be good for overcoming stress. Try this exercise - on a rug or mat, kneel, sit back on your heels, then lean forward and put your forehead on the floor and your arms alongside your legs, palms up. Hold for one to three minutes.

Make feet soft - Home made feet lotions to get nice soft feet

A person spends a lot of time each day walking or standing. The feet support the whole body and also affect gait and posture. Still we tend to neglect them. In order to take proper care of your feet you need to do the following:

(i) Exercising :
The first important point to remember is to buy shoes of right size and also consider the length of heels. It is preferable to buy shoes in the afternoon or evening when the feet are swollen from the day's walking so that you get the right size.

Next important point to remember is to exercise your feet. Just because you have been walking all day long that does not mean your feet have been exercised. You need to relax your tired feet muscles. Sit comfortably in a chair and clench your toes, then relax them - do this about 5-10 times each day.

Next draw circles in the air with your feet, one foot at a time - first in clockwise direction then in anti-clockwise direction. This strengthens the ankle muscles.

(ii) Bathing the feet :
Besides exercising, also have a footbath in the evenings on a regular basis. Take a basin of warm water and add a little salt to it. Then soak your feet in this. This should provide instant relief to your aching feet. You can also apply a lotion of glycerine and rose water. After your feet dry, apply talc.

(iii) Massaging the feet:
You can massage your feet with useful lotions. Below you can find some recipes to make feet lotions at home.

Home-made feet lotions for soft, clean feet:
You can make lotions for softening and cleaning your feet from common home products, you do not have to buy expensive products from market. Below are some recipes:

1. Mix together (in a bowl) half water and half lemon juice, then gently dip a paper towel into the mixture and apply to feet. This Softens and smooths the feet and removes foul odors.

2. Take 1 tablespoon almond oil,
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon wheat germ oil
12 drops eucalyptus essential/fragrance oil

Mix all the above ingredients in a dark colored bottle, shake extremely well. To use just rub into the feet and heels. Store in a cool dry place.

3. For soft feet, rub baby lotions all around your feet including the sides, inside of toes etc. Rub each feet for a minimum of 2-3 minutes for best results.

Learn more about making pleasant-smelling bath products at your home - click here

Cracked heels:
Cracked heels, peeling and itchy skin etc. indicate lack of attention to feet. Cracked heels are common for people who are constantly on their feet thus exerting pressure on the feet pad. Below are given some home remedies for cracked heels:

1. Apply pulp of a ripe banana on the dry or cracked area of the heel. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then rinse it clean.

2. Soak the feet in lemon juice for about 10 minutes. Do this on a weekly basis until you see an improvement.

3. Mixture or glycerine and rose water which is mentioned above in the footbath can help in healing cracked heels.

4. Orange scrub: This is an ideal foot scrub. Take two oranges, one cup of oil (any vegetable oil will do), and one cup of sea salt. Mix together salt and oil. Thickly slice the oranges into rings. Dip them into this oil and salt lotion and start rubbing all over the feet. Use generously on the hardened skin areas. Keep rubbing vigorously for 10 minutes, then rinse off. This cleans your feet, cools and softens them.

5. Rub the soles of your feet, toes, heels etc. vigorously in circular motions with a lemon sliced into half. This can cure calluses on the feet.

Other suggestions for overcoming cracked heels is to keep the feet clean from dirt, avoid walking barefoot as much as possible, exercise the feet regularly and take regular foot baths.

Shoe bites:
Shoe bites can be caused due to ill-fitting or new shoes. You can follow these preventive measures whenever you buy a new pair of shoes. Apply petroleum jelly to the inside of shoes, leave it overnight then next day clean it with a cloth and wear the shoes.

You may also apply a little coconut oil to inside of the shoes for 3 consecutive nights in order to soften them.

Smelly feet:
Do you or any of your friend or relative suffer from smelly feet? If so, you may find this section helpful to get rid of the problem.

What causes smelly feet? The main thing that causes feet smell is sweat. The feet contain nearly three million sweat glands. Though sweat is just salt and water and it does not have a smell of its own, but the smell can be caused due to bacteria present on our skins. The main reason some people's feet, socks and shoes smell worse than other peoples' is that some people sweat more than others.

Try the below suggestions to get rid of smelly feet problem:

  • Regularly have a footbath according to the instructions provided above ( under the heading - foot baths)
  • Always wear a clean pair of absorbent socks, preferably cotton.
  • In severe cases, you can wash your feet in green tea at the end of the day.
  • Massage your feet regularly with the home-made lotions as mentioned earlier.
  • You may apply an antiperspirant to your feet.

If you have a yellow layer on your finger or toe nails and you want it gone, use this tip:Rub the inside of a lemon On your nails, when they have a layer of lemon juice on them soak them in a bowl of warm milk for 10-15 minutes, the milk will eat away at the yellow on your nails and you will be rid of it! This technique can also be used to strengthen your nails.

Concentration Exercises

Do you want to learn tips on how to develop a super power memory? Subscribe to this free email course and enhance your memory for the better - Memory Course

Concentration Exercises:
The following exercises should help you develop concentration skills. You have to teach your mind to concentrate according to your will. The exercises that follow may seem tedious and monotonous, but they are useful. If you persist in doing them you should find them valuable, as they increase your powers of concentration.

Exercise 1:

Select some thought and see how long you can hold your mind on it. It is nice to have a clock at first and keep track of the time.

Suppose you decide to think about health, think of health as being a great blessing in the world. Don't let any other thought drift in. Just the moment one starts to obtrude, make it go away. Make it a daily habit of concentrating on this thought for, maybe ten minutes. Practice doing this until you can hold it to the exclusion of everything else. You might have to do this exercise regularly for 10 days or more in order to sharpen your concentration skills.

Exercise 2:
Sit in a comfortable chair and see how still you can keep. This is not as easy as it seems. You will have to center your attention on sitting still. Watch and see that you are not making any involuntary muscular movements. By a little practice you will find you are able to sit still without a movement of the muscles for fifteen minutes. At first I advise sitting in a relaxed position for five minutes. After you are able to keep perfectly still, increase the time to ten minutes and then to fifteen. This is as long as it is necessary. But never strain yourself to keep still. You must be relaxed completely. You will find this habit of relaxing is very good. Sitting still can help you avoid unnecessary bodily movements thus improving your concentration.

Exercise 3:
Watch yourself during the day and see that your muscles do not become tense or strained. See how easy and relaxed you can keep yourself. See how poised you can be at all times. Cultivate a
self-poised manner, instead of a nervous, strained appearance. This mental feeling will improve your carriage and demeanor. Stop all useless gestures and movements of the body. These mean that you have not proper control over your body. After you have acquired this control, notice how "ill-at-ease" people are that have not gained this control.

Watch people and see how many of them make unnecessary movements and lack poise. Get rid of any habit you have of twitching or jerking any part of your body. You will find you make many involuntary movements. You can quickly stop any of these by merely centering your attention on the thought, "I will not."

The purpose of the above exercises is to gain control over the involuntary muscular movement, making your actions entirely voluntary.

Exercise 4:
When You Read. No one can think without first concentrating his thoughts on the subject on hand. Every man and woman should train himself to think clearly. An excellent exercise is to read an article in a newspaper, and see in how few words you can express it. Reading an article to get only the essentials requires the closest concentration. If you are unable to write out what you read, you will know you are weak in concentration. Instead of writing it out you can express it orally if you wish. Go to your room and deliver it as if you were talking to some one. You will
find exercises like this of the greatest value in developing concentration and learning to think.

After you have practiced a number of these simple exercises read a book for twenty minutes and then write down what you have read. The chances are that at first you will not remember very many details, but with a little practice you will be able to write a very good account of what you have read. The closer the concentration the more accurate the account will be.

It is a good idea when time is limited to read only a short sentence and then try to write it down word for word. When you are able to do this, read two or more sentences and treat similarly.
The practice will produce very good results if you keep it up until the habit is fixed.

If you will just utilize your spare time in practicing exercises like those suggested you can gain wonderful powers of concentration. You will find that in order to remember every word in a sentence you must keep out every thought but that which you wish to remember, and this power of inhibition alone will more than compensate for the trouble of the exercise. Of course, success in all of the above depends largely upon cultivating, through the closest concentration, the power to image or picture what you read;

Exercise 5 :
Concentrate on the Within. Lie down and thoroughly relax your muscles. Concentrate on the beating of your heart. Do not pay any attention to anything else. Think how this great organ is pumping the blood to every part of the body; try to actually picture the blood leaving the great reservoir and going in one stream right down to the toes. Picture another going down the arms to the tips of the fingers. After a little practice you can actually feel the blood passing through your system.

If, at any time, you feel weak in any part of the body, will that an extra supply of blood shall go there. For instance, if your eyes feel tired, picture the blood coming from the heart, passing up
through the head and out to the eyes.

Exercise 6:
Watch Concentration. Sit in a chair and place a clock with a second hand on the table. Follow the second hand with your eyes as it goes around. Keep this up for five minutes, thinking of nothing else but the second hand, This is a very good exercise when you only have a few minutes to spare, if you are able to keep every other thought in the stream of consciousness subordinate to it. As there is little that is particularly interesting about the second hand, it is hard to do this, but in the extra effort of will power required to make it successful lies its value. Always try to keep as still as possible during these exercises.

Tips to Improve Concentration

All of us know the importance of concentration skills. Below are given some tips to help you develop better concentration whether you are working, studying or doing anything.

1. A simple exercise to increase concentration:
This is a simple exercise to improve concentration which can be done anytime you want to study or do an important task and want your mind to be focused on the task.

On a blackboard or a large piece of paper taped to the wall, draw large sideways figure 8s (the infinity symbol) over and over with the right hand, the left hand, and both hands. If you don't have paper, do the drawing motion in the air. Start drawing really large sideways figure 8s and continue making the figure smaller and smaller until you are drawing really tiny Figures. You are then ready to begin homework, or any work that requires concentration.

If anytime during your work you feel you are losing concentration, stop the work and do figure 8 exercise again. This exercise can also be done with closed eyes by imagining drawing figure 8's.

This exercise helps to activate both the right and left visual fields and hence makes the brain more focused.

2. Do one thing at a time, set aside specific time period:
It helps concentration if you just do one thing at a time giving it your complete undivided attention. Multitasking (doing many things simultaneously) will make you distracted and it is an ineffective way of doing things contrary to what many people believe. If you still think multitasking is good then read this article : Myth of multitasking (opens in a new window)

Do one thing at a time in order to develop concentration. If you are trying to think of giving presentation at office, or studying for your exam - for the next 30 minutes or so, just think of that alone. Focus your mind on the details of the job and how you plan to do it. Let not your attention wander to other things during this time.

3. Do something as if for first or last time :
We take a lot of everyday things for granted and do not observe as intently as we should. In order to develop focus and observation, try to look at tasks which you do everyday as if you are doing or seeing them for the first or the last time. This will encourage you to observe details which you may have missed before, thus improving your observation, concentration and also in gaining new insights.

4. 5 more rule :
I came across this technique while browsing. Its a wonderful technique. According to author of the website:
"There are two kinds of people -- those who have learned how to work through frustration, and those who wish they had."

From now on, if you're in the middle of a task and tempted to give up -- just do FIVE MORE. Read FIVE MORE pages. Finish FIVE MORE math problems. Work FIVE MORE minutes".

By implementing this strategy, you are stretching your mind past the point of frustration and building up mental endurance just as good athletes push past the point of exhaustion by not giving up when their body initially protests of tiredness. This way they build up the stamina.

5. Unclutter your mind by writing down :
While doing something important, if other worries are invading your mind thus affecting your
concentration then an effective way to overcome this problem is to write down any concern you might be having on a piece of paper, next to it write down a date or time when you want to deal with this problem. Writing it down this way will help in uncluttering your mind so that it is free to concentrate on the task at hand.

6. Reward yourself:
Decide before starting your work how you would like to reward yourself when you finish. The reward can be anything that makes you happy and relaxed - like having your favorite food,
going out for a walk, meeting your best friend etc. It doesn't have to be something big, any activity that gives you pleasure and takes your mind off work for some time will do. This system of rewarding yourself will increase motivation for doing things.

7. Be project specific :
Before you start any work, be clear in your mind as to what you want to accomplish. Before sitting down to study for exams, be clear what chapter you want to study now, how much time do you intend to study etc. Be as specific as possible and move on to some other task only after you complete this.

8. Avoid unnecessary movements:
People who have short attention spans and faulty concentration are usually restless people. If you watch them you will notice them making a lot of unnecessary movements like shaking hands and legs while sitting, talking etc.

While those people who have sound concentration are usually calm and composed, they sit and stand still without any unnecessary movements. Avoiding unnecessary movements will help you preserve your valuable energy, maintain composure and improve concentration.

9. Try to find comfortable relaxed noise-free atmosphere without distractions:
When you are working on something, give it your undivided attention and try to minimize distractions as much as possible. Try avoiding visual distractions by pulling curtains on windows if you are sitting near one.

10. Foods that increases concentration:
"Any vitamin deficiency can lead to difficulty with concentration," says Chris D. Meletis, ND, chief medical officer at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine.

Including Vitamins in your daily diet should help in improving concentration. Iron deficiency can also lead to poor concentration and irritability. High haem iron foods like meat, fish and chicken should be helpful in enhancing concentration.

Also take food and juices rich in Vitamin C. Try drinking a glassful of fresh fruit juice or drink black tea with lemon.

11. Be gentle with yourself:
If any thoughts come to your mind then gently drive them away, and bring your mind back to the subject at hand. Do not try to force out the thoughts, it works better if you are gentle. If any thought is important one which you would like to pay attention to later, then write it down on paper as mentioned in tip #5 above.

12.Use a concentration scoresheet:
Whenever doing some important work, use a concentration scoresheet. Each time you find your mind wandering, make a check mark on the sheet. If you do this on consistent basis, you may find that you have far fewer check marks and far greater concentration.

13. Break task into smaller parts:
Breaking a task into smaller parts will make it seem less daunting and help you approach it with more positivity. If you are trying to study a textbook for exam, then you can make a goal of finishing one chapter at a time.

14. Concentration exercises:
Concentration exercises help in training your mind to concentrate more and for longer periods of time. I have mentioned some concentration exercises in my post which you can read here :

Concentration Exercises

Its recommended to practice exercises given in that article on a daily basis in order to improve your concentration.

15. Do a thing wholeheartedly:
If you approach something half-heartedly, it can show in the quality of the work. In order to do things better, do them with interest. Whatever you are doing, try to find some aspect of it that interests you.If you can find something interesting in each thing you do, you can enjoy even the
most mundane and boring tasks.

If you follow the above tips seriously, then you can find a good improvement in concentration skills. If you want to learn faster and better, remember more and improve your memory so that you can study better or remember important information, then check this out:

SQ3R: An Effective strategy for reading textbooks

SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recall, and Review. This is a 4 step strategy is useful for processing large amount of information.

Lets discuss the technique in detail:

S - Survey: Before starting to read something, survey it. To survey a chapter, read the title, introduction, headings, and the summary or conclusion. Also, examine all visuals such as pictures, tables, maps, and graphs. Look for bold face prints, italics, end-of-chapter questions etc.

Q - Question: You need to have questions in your mind as you read. The questions will give you a purpose for reading and will help you in staying focussed. Turn the headings and sub-headings into as many questions as you can think of and write them down. This will stimulate your thinking. Also when you search for the answers to these questions, you are actively learning the subject rather than simply reading it.

R - Read: Read the information that follows each heading to find the answer to each question you formed. You may have to make up a lot of new questions as well and search for their answers too. This is active learning which is better than passive reading.

R - Recall: At the end of each section or sub-section, stop reading and recall your questions then try to answer them without looking at the textbook. See how many questions you can answer from memory. If you can't answer any question then look back into the section (as often as necessary). Dont proceed to the next section until you can answer all questions about this section from memory.

R - Review: After you have finished the entire chapter using the above given suggestions, go back over all the questions from all sections. Check out whether you can still answer them, if not look it up and refresh your memory.

This is the SQ3R strategy for studying any course material. You can add another two steps to this strategy and make it SQ3RWT strategy. The additional two steps are optional and they are as follows:

W - Write : After you finish a topic using SQ3R strategy, write down all questions you had developed while studying and their answers in your notebook. This way you will have notes on this particular topic for future reference. These notes can also provide you with good points for class discussions.

T - Teach : The final step is teaching what you have just learnt to somebody. By teaching it, you are re-inforcing in your mind what you have just studied and it will help you in remembering the information better. I had discussed this teach technique in detail in my previous post which you can read here :

Study Habits Guide:
Developing good study habits is important so that you can get good results in exams. You should be able to score good marks by cultivating good study habits in yourself.

Develop effective study habits and practice them till it becomes habitual. The following are some important suggestions:

1. Take responsibility of yourself:
In order to succeed at studies you need to put in the required effort, time and patience. You need to make a few sacrifices and assume responsibility for your actions. Are you prepared to do all the above?

2. Know what is important to you:
Dont lets others dictate what is important and what's not for you. You should know your own values and priorities and act accordingly.

3. Discover when you study at your best:
Is it in the mornings or evenings etc. Discover key periods when you are most focused and productive so that you can use such periods for your most difficult study challenges.

4. Always try to do one thing at a time:
Give undivided attention to one thing at a time. Set a time period for one important task and during that time do only that without letting your attention wander to other things. When the time is up, leave that work even if you have not completed it, you can go back to it later but now for habit's sake leave it.
Doing one thing at a time can help you concentrate better on the important tasks and you tend to do the tasks better this way rather than trying to multitask.

5. Look for better alternatives to problems:
Suppose you have read some course material and do not understand it fully, don't just re-read it. Try something else - like consulting with your professor, discussing the subject with others, research on internet etc.

6. Continually challenge yourself:
Consistently challenge yourself to do better. Competing with yourself is and more productive than competing with others.

7. Study and work within a specific length of time everyday:
Set aside a specified time each day and stick to it. This can help in making you more self-disciplined and immensely help in your studies. You may want to try devoting some time after school/college to studying your lessons.

8. Be positive while studying and preparing for exams:
Being positive helps in avoiding stress and panic before exams.

9. Take an active role in studying:
Rather than just reading the book, try the following suggestions to make studies more interesting:

  • Use a highlighter to mark important points,
  • make notes of significant points in a notebook,
  • record questions about items you don't understand,
  • try to predict what will be on the next page and connect what you're reading with other things you've read,
  • convert the sections or paragraph headlines into questions and compose their answers after reading the paragraph or section - for example, if you are reading a section called "The Causes of the American Revolution," ask yourself, "What were the causes of the American Revolution?" Reading and answering questions aloud will help you understand and remember the material.

10. Read for fun and knowledge:
Many people may like reading but hate studying academic books. I am one of such people - I like reading books and browse information sites on internet but dont like reading academic books. One way to deal with this problem is to pretend that you're just studying for knowledge and fun and not for exams. This helps in removing exam stress from our minds and making us feel relaxed so that we can concentrate on gaining knowledge from the text we are reading.

11. Tips to Develop interest in a subject:
If you find that you lack interest in a particular subject, then the following tips may help in generating interest for that subject:

  • (i) Think about why you want to learn about a given subject : List out as many valid reasons as you can think of and keep the list handy with you. This list can help you to get motivated in studying that subject because it shows you why this particular subject is important and you cannot avoid it.
  • (ii) In order to develop interest in a subject, gain more information about it. The more information you gather about something the more likely that you will become interested in it.
  • (iii) In order to develop interest in a subject, exert activity toward it. Keep reading about it, do research on that subject, try to help someone else in that subject etc. All these activities help you in strengthening the interest further.
  • (iv) If you find a subject too difficult as a result of which your interest is dwindling then it might help to find an alternate textbook to study the subject, or to take the help of a professor.
For more detailed explanation of the above tips you may read my previous post by clicking here : Become Interested in Any Subject

12. Overcome Procastination:
If you are in the habit of procastinating (putting things off to do later), then the following tips may help you: overcoming procastination tips

13. Finding a suitable Place for Studies:
It is important that the place you use for studying is comfortable and free from distractions. Here is a checklist for selecting suitable study place:

  • Is your study place accessible to me whenever you need it?
  • Is it free from distractions?
  • Does your study place have enough storage space to keep all your items - books, pens, rulers and other things you require?
  • Does your study place have enough light and comfortable temperature?A
  • re you comfortable sitting at that place for longer periods of time while studying?

14. Physical preparations while studying:
Have a bottle of water with you while studying and keep drinking from time to time. Remember that water helps electrical and chemical reactions in our brain and it is recommended to drink 8-12 glasses of water a day. Also use appropriate lighting that does not strain your eyes.

15. Remember to take frequent breaks while studying:
Breaks are important in order to give your mind much needed rest so that it can come back fresh. If you study continuously without breaks then you may find your concentration and energy levels going down. Hence it is not a good thing to study continuously without breaks as it decreases your productivity and at the same time causes feelings of fatigue. Break times can be 10 minutes or a little more.

16. Follow SQ3R Strategy:
While reading any course material or textbook follow the SQ3R strategy. The SQ3R technique is a simple and effective tool to grasp the subject and remember it better. Read about it by clicking here: SQ3R strategy

17. Use Teach technique to study better:
After you have studied a topic, you can use "teach" technique in order to better register in your mind what you have just read. Read about this technique here : Learn Any Subject Better

Information on home remedies for diabetes

A 3 year research by Malaysian University has confirmed that cinnamon has the potential to reduce blood sugar levels. The spice seems to bave a positive effect specially on Type II diabetes. Studies by Agriculture Research Service in United States have also found that certain substances in cinnamon helps cells become more responsive to insulin.

Type II diabetes causes cells to lose their ability to respond to insulin, the hormone that tells the body to remove excess glucose from the bloodstream. This condition usually develops in people in their middle age and prematurely kills an estimated 100 million of the world’s population every year.

Dr. Mohammad Roji who is the research and development manager at UTM (University Technologi Malaysia) has further added that cinnamon extract was found to improve blood circulation, heal wounds, reduce pain spasm and prevent ulcer and allergies.

Cinnamon is an ingredient used in cooking, and in cakes, pastries and beverages like coffee and tea.

Good Night Sleep Tips - 15 Tips for Getting to Sleep

Good night's sleep is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Your sleep can affect other areas of your life like how you feel during the day, how active you are, your studies, career, relationships etc.

The National Sleep Foundation reports (2002) that America is on the verge of a poor sleep epidemic, characterized by the following eye-opening statistics:

>>> 64% of American adults get less than the eight hours of sleep that experts recommend is required to maintain optimal physical, mental, and emotional health.

>>> One-third of the US population says they get less sleep now than they did five years ago

>>> One-half of Americans have experienced insomnia (sleeplessness)

>>> Drowsiness due to a lack of a proper night of sleep interferes with the daily activities of 37 percent of all adults.

People should wake up every morning feeling refreshed and energetic without the need of an alarm clock. This may be possible if you have a good healthy sleep at night.

Below are some tips for better sleep:
=====================================

1. Have a regular bed that is comfortable. Also maintain regular schedule for sleeping and waking up, even on weekends. Try going to bed at the same time and getting up at the same time every day. Maintaining this time schedule is very important. This helps in overcoming sleep problems.

2. Create a sleep-conducive environment that is dark, quiet, comfortable, cool relaxing. Make sure your bed and mattress is comfortable.

3. Finish your dinner atleast 2-3 hours before sleeping. If you feel hungry before sleeping, try nutrition bars instead of eating just prior to sleep.

4. Avoid nicotine, caffeine and other stimulants which can be found in coffee, tea, soft drinks, cigarettes, chocolate etc.

5. Regular exercise can help in maintaining good health and can also be useful for good sleep. But remember to finish your workout atleast a few hours before your bedtime.

6. Try to go to bed only when you are sleepy. This avoids that time you often spend trying to sleep but failing to do so.

7. Keep your bedroom at a comfortable temperature, neither too hot nor too cold.

8. Don't worry unnecessarily if you feel you are not getting enough sleep, as it might make matters worse. If you have the habit of waking up in the middle of the night and looking at your clock, it is advisable to turn away the clock from your eyes so that you have to turn it back in order to see the time and you may decide not to go through that trouble and may soon overcome this habit.

9. If you cannot sleep for 15-20 minutes then get out of bed and do something else. Return to bed only when you feel reall sleepy. Repeat this as many times as necessary during the night.

10. Nutritional food like green vegetables and fresh fruits can help in improving the quality of your sleep.

11. An old-fashioned remedy is to take two teaspoons of cider vinegar with two teaspoons of honey in a glass of warm water.

12. Footbaths in lukewarm water can help in inducing sleep.

13. While lying in bed you can visualize various parts of your body relaxing.Wear an eyemask to shut out the light.Sweet Dreams Sleep Mask

14. Free your mind from worries as they can prevent you from having a restful sleep. Leave office work at office, do not spend more than 3-5 minutes thinking about the day's problems while you are in bed, avoid having arguments with somebody in the evenings as they can interfere with your sleep at night.

15. If you have a long list of things to do and your mind is constantly thinking about them then one of the best ways to free up your mind is to write down each important task on a piece of paper, next to each task you may write down a future date and time when you want to deal with it. Writing them down will help in uncluttering your mind so that you can now peacefully go to sleep.

Some tips to help you feel fresh and energetic during day:
==========================================================

1. If you have problems getting up from bed in morning, then try this simple technique to fully awaken yourself. Just go into direct sunlight and stay there for 2 minutes. When we are in darkness, our body produces hormones which make us feely sleepy. This sleepiness can be overcome by exposing our bodies to bright light, specially sunlight. You should feel wide awake and fresh within just few minutes of being in sunlight.

2. Wipe your face with hands after getting up from bed in order to drive away the sleepy feeling.

3. While getting up in the morning, do not jump out of your bed. Instead take your time - adjust your clothes, stretch your body and ease out of bed rather than hurrying. Drink a glass of water to get your system going again.

4. Take short naps during the day to help you remain energetic. You may avoid sleeping for longer hours during day, but take short naps ranging from 10-30 minutes as these naps will help in recovering lost energy and keeping you fresh all day long. Research has proved the benefits of short naps and many busy people have been known to take naps during the day - among them being Thomas A. Edison, Mark Twain etc.

Tips for people who work in Night Shifts:
=========================================

People working in night shifts like working at airports, hospitals, in customer care etc. have to sleep during day and they may find the noise and light to be distracting. Here are some tips for such people:

1. Use room darkening shades or curtains if you are sleeping during daytime or use an eyemask like this one: Sweet Dreams Sleep Mask
2. Use fan to block out outside noises or use a sound conditioner:Marpac 580 Sound Screen & SleepMate Sound Conditioner

Are you failing despite persistence?

All of us must have heard the proverb:
"Winners never quit and quitters never win".

Time and again, we have seen the value of persistence in the lives of succesful people in whatever field they were, whether in business, politics, sports etc.

But there may be a lot many men and women who persisted in trying to achieve something yet they failed. You may be among them, you may have been trying to achieve something from many years and still have not succeeded.

So what is the difference between people who persist and finally succeed and people who fail despite persisting tirelessly??

There is a very important difference. Read on.

People who persist and still fail in achieving their desired goals, are usually those who keep on doing the same thing again and again and yet expect a different result.

Persistence is not about repeating the same thing over and over and hoping for a different result each time. It is stupidity, not persistence. Such persistence is misguided and not likely to help.

People who tasted success are usually those who learn from their mistakes, change their approach, try new things and keep trying new things till they are able to finally achieve their desired result.
Such people are open-minded, willing to learn, try new approaches and don't assume they know everything. All of these are very important traits.

Thomas A. Edison seems to have failed 10,000 times before finally inventing the light bulb. Now each time he failed, he tried another experiment and kept on doing it. He didnt repeat the same experiment 10,000 times hoping for a favorable result. If he had done that, then most likely the light bulb would not have been invented, not by him atleast.

So remember the following points while pursuing your goals:

1. Be persistent.

2. Try another approach if the earlier one didn't work.

3. Keep an open mind and be willing to learn, specially from your mistakes. Do not assume that you know everything.

4. Do not think that you have tried all possible approaches. You may have tried all approaches that you are aware of, but there may be things that you don't currently know. So focus on finding newer approaches.

If you do the above, then you are giving your mind strong signals that you are determined to achieve your goal. Your mind no longer has any excuses. This is the kind of persistence that we need.

An important attitude for success

There is a very useful attitude that you can have when you are
trying to achieve any goal. Try to have the following attitude for
any goals that you consider worthwhile and useful:

"I will try to achieve this goal no matter how much time it takes".

You may be determined to achieve a particual goal. However there is
a slight difference in the above mentioned attitude that makes it so
much more useful.

There are two powerful things in the above mentioned attitude and they are:

1. You are committing yourself to the goal for a very long time - this is important to develop persistence,

2. You are not keeping any time frames for achieving that goal. This is also
very important. When you lift the time constraints while trying to achieve something
you become more relaxed and positive. Not just that, your whole
approach to the goal may change.

You will now pay attention to a lot of details which you might have neglected before, you will take the time to gain information that is essential for your particular goal. After removing the time constraint, you may realize that the quality of your work has improved.

If you have time constraints, then you would try to rush things. You would try to achieve things quickly, try shortcuts and miss important steps in between. You may also not give sufficient time to learn new things which can be helpful in the pursuit of your goal.

So allow yourself time to gather information, learn the important stuff, do things at a pace with which you feel comfortable, so that you dont get overwhelmend.

If you take out the time limits and commit yourself for long time to your goal, and say to yourself that you will keep trying no matter how much time it takes, you are sending a message to your brain that you are not going to give up. This is a very powerful message and your mind is likely to respond in a similar fashion by becoming more focussed about your goal.
