Difference between poor and good salesmen

You might have heard that people need to have good talking skills in order to be good salesman. But this is not true. We do not need to be a great talker in order to be a good salesman. However there is something else we need to be good at in order to succeed at selling. Read on to know about it.

If someone has excellent talking skills, then it might certainly be to his/her advantage in selling but this skill is not an absolutely necessity. More than talking skills, what we need are excellent listening skills.

If you get a chance to observe or study about successful salespeople, you can notice how each one of them pays special undivided attention to the customer. They listen intently to what the customer is saying, watch their gestures and reactions and notice even tiny movements and facial expressions of the customers.

They want to find out what kind of effect they are having on the customers and they are interested in learning the problems, goals and priorities of the customer. Almost all successful salesmen without exception are good at listening skills.

If you are able to study and observe in detail good and poor salesmen, you may certainly notice that one major difference between them is that poor salesmen are usually poor listeners. They usually do not pay proper attention to the customer and are more focused on what they have to say.

These poor salesmen usually believe that selling means to impress the customer with your talking skills and knowledge about the product.

They, poor salesmen, just go on babbling about their product, service or company without stopping to see if the customer is really interested in their speech or not.

The good salesmen on the other hand, pay close attention to the customers and try to gain as much knowledge of the customers as possible. They try to find out what the customer's needs are and whether their product or service can satisfy those needs or not.

If we are trying to market something to people, we all should start our selling by knowing the customers' needs first before we even start our talk.

By first gaining as much knowledge about the customer as possible, and knowing about their needs and buying criteria, we can easily focus our selling efforts on those things so that we have an excellent chance of making a sale.

So you see, selling is not about making a great sales pitch. Its more about asking the right questions, finding out answers to all the important questions about your customer and knowing about them first. This is possible only if we pay close attention and listen properly to the customer.

In order to be able to give ourselves enough to work with, it is recommended to know atleast 3 needs of our customer before we begin talking about our product or service. By gaining as much knowledge as possible about our customer, we can be in a better position to convince him/her to try out our product/service.

We can gain knowledge about our customer by asking questions and listening intently to them. For this we need to work on our listening skills. We need to develop our listening skills a lot.

Always try to remember that selling is not a one-sided affair, but a two way communication. It is not just about talking about our products but also about listening to customer's needs.

Good selling is about knowing your customer's needs, problems and priorities and then working out and mentioning how our product or service can satisfy those needs.

How to stay positive in tough situations

It can be difficult to maintain positive attitude in tough situations. Here is a very good method of doing our best to stay positive despite things not going the way we want them to.

Whenever we are faced with a challenging or seemingly negative situation, we can ask ourselves - "what positive stance can I take in this situation?". Then try to think of positive replies. By asking yourself this simple question each time you are faced with a tough situation, you can avoid becoming negative and maintain a positive attitude.

You can ask yourself this question for each failure, weakness, setback, difficulty, negative outcome etc. that you face in life.

After I started using this method, I have really been able to focus my concentration on positive things I can do in any undesired situation instead of dwelling on the negatives as I previously used to do.

This method has proved useful for me to stay positive at all times, and it should also be useful to others. Try it out yourself and see the results.

Long and Short Term Goal Setting Method - Steps to Success

Many people try to aim for big goals and feel overwhelmed right from the start. A big disadvantage of focusing on BIG GOALS is that you may not feel as confident of achieving them, hence you may not give your 100% effort. A further disadvantage is that you do not get instant feedback as to whether you are really progressing on the right path towards your goal or not.

I am not suggesting that you should not think about BIG GOALS. The solution which I suggest is that you have to have a BIG GOAL which you should strive for, but also to set many smaller goals that will lead towards that BIG GOAL.

Having smaller goals are like steps which lead to the top i.e. your bigger goal. These smaller goals give you instant feedback to measure performance and progress. You can then learn quickly from any mistakes you make while trying to accomplish these smaller goals.

Also by having a series of smaller goals, you will tend to focus better because you are just focusing on one single task at a given time. You will give 100% to each and every single task which leads to your main BIG GOAL.

Smaller goals can keep you working everyday on a consistent basis towards your main goal. We have a tendency to fall off track, to forget about our goals or give up on them if they take long time to achieve. You can avoid these pitfalls by developing smaller goals and keep working on them.

Remember that all big successes are usually a result of many small successes and likewise big failures a result of many small failures. So try to achieve many small successes which are related and would lead to your ultimate destination.

When you set smaller goals and achieve them your confidence and self-esteem would increase, so also your motivation level. Celebrate many small victories along the way to your big goal. Keep in constant touch with your ultimate goal through this series of small goals.

Big goals require a lot of willpower, knowledge, determination, motivation, skills and other things. Smaller goals too require all the above things but in a lesser measure. You would need to muster enough will power and determination to achieve a smaller goal. Once you have achieved it, you can repeat the same thing with another smaller goal and accumulate these small victories so that you might achieve that bigger victory you have been dreaming of. Do not underestimate the importance of smaller goals.

Another important thing to remember is to have a time frame in mind to achieve your goal. Decide in how much time do you want to achieve your BIG GOAL (a month, week, two months, 1 year etc.). Then set monthly, weekly and daily goals in order to keep yourself on track to achieving your big goal on time.

It is preferable if you can do something everyday in the pursuit of your goal so that you don't lose focus. It is better to make everyday count and not skip a single day to reach nearer towards your BIG GOAL. You can do this by having 'daily goals' to strive for.

Here is the goal setting method I suggest :

1. Have a BIG GOAL to strive for.
2. Break it into a series of smaller goals.
3. Break the smaller goals down into monthly and weekly goals.
4. Break them down further into daily goals.

Many people start with a big goal but fail to achieve it. One common thing among such people is that they usually do not divide their goal into smaller, more manageable parts thereby making the whole task difficult for themselves.

There can be many reasons why we may fail to acheive a goal:
1. Lack of commitment
2. they have lost interest and motivation in the goal
3. feel overwhelmed, frustrated or dissapointed
4. lack of standards against which to monitor their progress
5. are not able to acquire the required skills and knowledge necessary for acheivement of their goal.
6.lack of discipline, persistence and determination
7. they are not able to maintain their focus on the goal
8. lack of energy and enthusiasm while pursuing goals.

All the above problems can be overcome to a certain extent by having many smaller goals leading to ur big one. You don't belive me? Think about it yourselves.

For example, if a person shows lack of energy and enthusiasm for a bigger goal that may be due to feelings of desperation and doubt whether he/she is really capable of acheiving that goal or not. If that person breaks the goal into smaller ones which he/she are difficult enough to stretch them a little but not so difficult as to overwhelm them, I really doubt if they will still display the same laziness and lack of passion. On the contrary, they are likely to display a lot of energy because they are focussing just on a single sub-goal and believe they can acheive it with ease.

Take another example - if a person lacks sufficient knowledge and skills to acheive a particular goal, then it is not necessary for him or her to try and gain all the knowledge and skills at a single time. He/she can divide the major goal into smaller parts, and just focus on one part at a time - gain the knowledge necessary to accomplish just that one smaller goal then move on to the next. In this way they can make their task easier.

You should make your goals challenging and difficult to a certain extent so that you have to stretch a little, but they should not be so difficult as to completely dishearten you or overburden you. If such is the case, then you need to break that goal into smaller ones.

Breaking a big goal into smaller goals can be an effective strategy for long term goals. Long term goals can be divided into smaller short term goals.

Ways to Improve Memory Naturally

If you want to subscribe to free e-course on how to develop a super memory, click here - FREE Super Memory Course

Whenever we try to remember something - like an idea or a conversation or an event, the first thing we usually do is to recall the place where we were when it happened.

Can you guess why we try to recall the place when it does not have anything to do with the information we are trying to remember?

It seems that we are programmed to associate places with experiences. According to 'Scientific American Mind', we have special cells in our brain which keep track of various places we have been. These cells communicate with others that have the job of evaluating what we were doing at the time.

How can we use this information to improve memory naturally?
Since our brains may use places to trigger memories, why not pay special importance to our surroundings at all times so that we may remember and recall important information better. Thus we can improve memory skill.

We may follow various strategies or tips for remembering information we might need to recall later - like a telephone number etc. We might repeat it till it becomes drilled in our memory, or write it down etc. Let us add another technique to our memorizing.

Lets start paying closer attention to our surrounding.

How to improve long term memory?
By making a habit of being aware of your surroundings and observing small details within it, we might be making our memories stronger. Improving your observation skills might improve your short term and long term memory.

Lets consider this as a game to improve memory. From now on, lets start honing our observation and concentration skills. This can be one of the best ways to improve memory naturally. I came across this useful tip in the following article - Boost your memory

Altruism Study - Brain Effects of Altruism

Do you know what is altruism? A rough definition of altruism is the act of giving unselfishly without expecting returns. We do not expect any return favors in our heart and just want to help others.

We all would agree that altruism helping behavior is good but do you think giving to others unselfishly is beneficial to the giver in any way?

Do you think this helping behavior has any benefits to our health, self-esteem or our brain? Read on to be pleasantly surprised.

The Brain Effects of Altruism - Increasing Brain Power:
Surprise! Surprise! A new and interesting research suggests that it can help in increasing brain power. Yes you read it right!!!

It seems that both receiving and giving activate pleasure centers in our brain which give us instant gratification. However while giving, a couple of other brain regions in the cerebral cortex are also activated which is not the case while receiving.

So the act of giving might strengthen certain regions of our brain that are involved in higher levels of thinking, specially related to social interactions.

The act of giving might improve your skills of interaction with people, which can increase your
self-esteem. If you just care to receive things then you are thinking short term but if you are always willing to help and give then you are thinking long-term, even though you may not realize it at that time. So we now know a good method of how to increase brain power.

Isn't this an interesting and useful bit of information. I read about this research in the following article - Can giving Improve your brain ?

While this might be interesting to read, but it is not surprising to me because I have always believed that following Islamic injunctions would help me in many different ways. This new study just confirms my belief.

This study should make us adopt altruistic behavior and encourage our children to do so too. Try to increase altruism in yourself and children.

We would also need to change our thinking about helping others at our workplace. Altruism should be adopted everywhere - at home, workplace, neighborhood, while walking on streets etc. We have got another reason to be good to others and help with a clean heart.

What's your definition of success?

What is your definition of success?
Everyone has some kind of definition for success. This definition affects what we think and how we view success and failure and how we go after our goals. In order to improve your chances of succeeding at something, you may need to change your outlook on success. This can be done by adopting a better definition of success.

A very useful definition of success is : Success does not mean that you cannot fail. Success means that you cannot accept failure.

This definition of success is very useful because it forces us to view failures as temporary things and not be disheartened by them. Whenever we attempt to accomplish anything, it is very likely that we will face initial failures and obstacles. If you are disheartened and give up, then you may not achieve what you had set out to.

Another problem is that whenever we fail at something, our confidence may be affected as a result of it. And any future attempts we might make at out goal, may be half-hearted attempts.

The above two problems can be easily overcome by adopting the definition of success I mentioned.

If you refuse to accept failure, you will try harder the next time whenever you fail. You will gather more information, work on your shortcomings and learn from your mistakes so that next time you can have a greater chance of succeeding in your goal. You will also change your focus from something you cannot control (i.e. the outcome) to something which you can (i.e. not accepting defeat despite repeated failures) and will keep on persisting with rock-solid determination towards your goals.

Isn't it a cool definition of success?

Earning money on internet

I stumbled upon a very interesting idea about internet marketing in this article: don't think about making money

The idea is this: dont think about making money, if you do then it might elude you and get you
frustrated. Instead, focus on pleasing people within a subject matter which you feel passionate about. If you change your focus to this then you may giving your business a solid foundation and you may not tire of growing it.

It looks an interesting idea... We really need to shift our focus from just making money to helping people. Money will most likely follow. Create websites of real value to people. Ask yourself, "What problems can I help people solve?".

Nobody's saying that earning money is bad or something like that. Even though, the primary
motivation for many of us while blogging or creating websites might be to earn money, but we have to forget about it for some time and while creating websites or writing content, focus solely on pleasing our site visitors with good quality useful content. This is the method recommended by Ken Evoy of sitesell.com too.

What are your views on this subject?

A simple exercise to straighten spine

Many people have to stand for long periods of time everyday. If we do not learn how to stand properly (proper standing posture), then it can cause us back and neck problems.

Some advantages of proper posture are:
1. Keeps bones and joints in the correct alignment so that muscles are being used properly.

2.Prevents fatigue because muscles are being used more efficiently, allowing the body to use less
energy.

3. Prevents backache and muscular pain.

4. Gives us a good appearance.

A Few General Rules For Standing:
- maintain a straight spine rather than slouching to the side
- avoid slouching forward or hyperextending
- keep the chin up with the head centered over the shoulders
- keep the feet slightly less than shoulder width apart
- keep the knees slightly bent
- avoid standing still for long periods of time, rather, sit down or move around.

If you had not been giving proper attention to your posture all these years, you may atleast make an effort to start now. Below is a simple exercise you can do everyday in order to straighten your spine.

To straighten your spinal column, back up to a wall. Make sure that as much of your body is touching the wall. Pull in your stomach, Expand your chest. Stretch your neck straightening your head. Hold this position for Ten seconds and GROW.

Do this simple healthy exercise everyday. It can do a lot of good and it takes very little time. Only ten seconds. ( taken from http://www.geocities.com/gottogrow)

Do you suffer from mental chatter - thoughts constantly running through your mind? Do you want to stop this chatter so that you can enjoy a few moments of mental peace? A simple technique here:

Close your eyes and just focus on your breathing in and out. Don't do anything special, just follow your breathing. If you keep doing this for a few minutes, you may notice your breathing becoming more relaxed and your mind calming down. Now try to pay attention to your heartbeat as well. Again, do nothing special and just focus on your breathing and listen to your heartbeat. A few minutes of this exercise can help in really calming you down and stopping your mental chatter. You may try it out now.

I learned of this wonderful technique by reading this blog post : stop mental chatter

Feeling sleepy all the time

Do you want to have more energy? Do you wish you didn't feel so sleepy and lazy throughout the day?

Well, here are a few tips if you are the kind of person who sleeps a lot or feels sleepy many times during the day.

Read the tips below, and at the same time you can check out this resource which I recommend if you want to overcome problem like feeling sleepy or tired all the time - Stop Feeling Tired
(opens in a new window)

1. Wash your face:
If during the day, you feel sleepy then it can help tremendously if you wash your face with cold water. The cold water should drive away the sleepy feeling from you.

2. Go into light:
If you are sitting in a dark room, get outdoors into the light or atleast open the windows so that light can come into the room. When we are in darkness, our body produces hormones which make us feel sleepy. Exposing our bodies to light (specially sunlight) would stop the production of this hormone so that the sleepy feeling goes away and you may feel active again.

3. Get some physical exercise:
If your work involves sitting in one place for a long time, then get up and get some physical exercise whenever you feel sleepy. Lack of physical movement can also make us want to sleep. So whenever you feel lazy and your eyes are shutting down during the day, get up and take a walk, or do some other moderate physical activity till you feel your sleepiness is gone.

4. Deep breathing Exercise:
Whenever you feel fatigue or tiredness, do this simple breathing exercise and you might be amazed at the results:

Inhale air through nose for 4,5 or 6 seconds, then retain the air for about 3 seconds, then exhale through the mouth. One important thing to remember is that exhaling must last atleast 3 times longer than inhaling - for example, if you inhaled for 5 seconds, then exhale through the mouth for 15 seconds, if you inhaled for 6 seconds then exhale through mouth for atleast 18 seconds and so on. This is essential to empty all the air from the lungs so that you can get fresh supply of oxygen in.

Try the following experiment - push out all the air from your lungs. Pinch your nasal passages closed, keeping your mouth shut. Now, open your mouth. You can see that you still have some air in your lungs to exhale. So get into the habit of making that extra effort to empty your lungs of air.

The above breathing exercise was learnt from this website: www.geocities.com/gottogrow which deals with exercises, diet and other tips to increase height and improve posture.

5. Take short naps:
Short naps during the day, specially during afternoon, can be very refreshing and also good for heart. Naps can instantly re-energize your tired body so that you can continue your work for the rest of the day. Read more about the benefits of naps here: take nap

6. Inculcate proper sleeping habits:
Find out if you are having proper sleep every night. Maintain a regular sleeping pattern, maintain a sleep log to keep track of your sleeping habits.

Self-help junkies

Are you a self-help junkie or do you know one? A self-help junkie can be defined as someone who reads a lot of self-help books, attends seminars, enjoys inspirational stories etc. but when you look at that person's life, you may find little improvements.

What could be the reason for this?
An article I was going through shed some light on this.

One of the major reasons that self-help junkies do not make as much progress could be because they don't take appropriate actions. They may read a lot of books, but when the time comes to take action they procrastinate, make excuses and avoid taking positive action. In fact, reading self-help material becomes a means of escape for them and it develops into an addiction.

There is no substitute to positive action, no matter how much you read and how many lectures you listen to. Unfortunately there are many self-help books that feed this kind of addiction by providing people with inflated stories, happy ideas instead of workable action plans.

So to get out of this rut, you need to take action. That is the real secret to making progress. This is a very useful article, read the full one here : self-help junkies

Waking up problems? Help for waking up in the morning

Do you need help waking up in the morning early?
Steve Pavlina, has a very interesting article at his site about how to get up early in the morning. This article can be very helpful for all such people like me who want to be early risers but have problem doing that.

Rising early can have many advantages like being more productive and energetic for any kind of work early in the morning, have more time during the day to complete your tasks, better health, sound mind etc.

Steve, it seems has tried different methods of trying to get up early in the morning - he has tried going to bed early, going to bed and getting up at the same time everyday etc.

But the method he found most effective is this: At night, go to bed only when you feel sleepy but in the morning, get up at a fixed time by setting up an alarm clock (do this for all 7 days a week). No matter what time you go to bed, always get up at the same time each morning.

Using this technique, you may be able to get better control of your sleeping patterns. If you sleep late at night and still get up early, you may feel tired during the day but the second night you would want to go to bed earlier. After a few days, you may settle into a nice and healthy pattern. Read the full article of Steve at : Become an early riser

Seating posture tips

Seating posture tips: many of us have to sit for long hours in front of the computer. If our sitting posture is not correct,we may soon develop back pain or other similar problems.

Here are some tips to show you how to sit properly in order to avoid back problems:

1. Supporting your feet:
If your feet are hanging or tucked under you, the increased pressure on the backs of legs can impair return circulation from the feet. So, support feet on the floor, or on a foot rest if your feet don't reach the floor.

2.Ankles should be forward of the knee:
# Don't put your feet on the spokes of the chair
# Support feet on the floor, or on a foot rest if your feet don't reach the floor
# Adjust chair height for comfortable keyboarding

3.Three finger gap behind the knee
When selecting a chair it is important to find one that has either the right size seat pan. The goal is to have about a 3 finger gap between the front of the chair and the back of the knee when your are sitting comfortably against the backrest.

* Support feet with the ankles forward of the knees
* Three finger gap behind the knee
* Front of seat pan should not press into back of leg
* Add a pillow or foam to build up backrest and fill in the gap.

4. Knees at or below hip level
A common misconception is that the knees should be higher than the hips. Infact, the midpoint of the knee should be lower than the midpoint of the hip. You may accomplish this by adjusting the seat of the chair so that it is parallel to the ground. You may also sit on a cushion so that the thighs slope down slightly. However make sure that it isn't a dramatic slope.

Overcome sleep deficit through power naps

What is power nap?

Mid-day sleep is termed as 'power nap'.

“A power nap is defined as a short nap during the day of about 20-30 minutes duration”, says William Deardorff, Medical Advisor for www.Spine-health.com.

Benefits of power nap:
People who regularly take mid-day naps experience decrease in drowsiness. Research has also shown that it increases your level of alertness during the day and reduces stress.

Some more advantages of mid-day naps are:

  • boost in productivity at work,
  • improved ability to concentrate,
  • less stress,
  • better reaction time,
  • increased learning,
  • more efficiency,
  • better mood,
  • better health,
  • increase in stamina,
  • memory improvement,
  • you can avoid sleep debt by making up on your sleep deficit.

Researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies found that with a nap, brain activity stays high throughout the day; but without a nap, brain activity declines over the course of a day, says Dr. Deardorff.

Research also says that taking a nap of 30 minutes during mid-day is better than sleeping 30 minutes later in the morning.

Who uses power naps:
Many busy executives who are deficient on regular night sleep make up with short naps during the day. Lance Armstrong was training for the tour-de-france bicycle race, and naps were an important part of his routine.

Many well-known personalities around the world also make use of the benefits offered by power naps, among them being Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, John D. Rockefeller, John F. Kennedy to name just a few.

If you feel drowsy on the ride from home to work or back, or if you lack energy during afternoons then try out power naps.

Power naps are especially beneficial for individuals who engage in high pressure situations such as:

  • Important presentations
  • Meetings with clients
  • Long drives or commutes
  • Complex problem solving

How long should you power nap?
The ideal time for power naps can be anywhere between 10-30 minutes. However you can take even shorter naps and wake up feeling refreshed. When Steve Fossett made his record 67-hour flight around-the-world alone in his jet, he took a couple dozen two-to-three minute naps as his only sleep, and claims that he awoke refreshed.

A longer nap of 1-2 hours can also be beneficial but you may not be able to do it on workdays, however you can make it a part of your weekend schedule.

To derive maximum long-term benefits from power naps, make it a regular habit and not just a one time thing. Napping can be good for the old as well as the young.

Folks, do not view mid-day snoozing as a habit for the lazy. Let us all embrace it.

How to handle pressure

A lot of people tend to overlook the effect of stress on one's career. Though a little pressure can be good for improved performance, an overdose of it can make people lose their head and give in to immediate impulses that lack judgment.

Some examples of pressure situations at workplace can be: meeting deadlines, handling peer pressure, handling disagreements and arguments, handling difficult co-workers to name just a few.

So how do you keep your cool under pressure at workplace and respond in a sensible manner? Here are just a few tips. You may add some more to these in the comments section.

1. Take time before you react. Study any give situation carefully, think about it and come up with a plan. This is better way to respond than being hasty.

2. Prioritize tasks, focus on tasks which are linked to your most immediate objective. Here is a superb article on improving your prioritizing skills and becoming a master at it.

3. Direct your energy toward situations where you can affect the outcome and don’t spend time worrying about what you cannot change. Successful people focus on tasks which they can control and let go of the rest.

Winners narrow their efforts only to what will help them win. So recognize what you can control and what you cant.

4. Take the help of others. You can seek the input of other people before reaching any decision. You may also delegate some tasks to others if you have a tight schedule. Decide which tasks can be delegated to other people and do so.

"Office Spa: Stress Relief for the Working Week", a book by relaxation expert Darrin Zeer, also offers some tips—everyday items to keep at your desk to make your working hours a little less stressful.

5. Learn how to deal with different kinds of people at work - complainers, aggressive people etc. Develop your listening skills in order to interact better with people and pay attention to improving your communication skills. Here is a useful article - How to be cool

6. Stop looking at the clock. When you have to meet a tight deadline, then instead of constantly looking at the clock, focus on the task at hand. Do the task with full concentration. Break bigger tasks down into smaller ones, try to finish the most urgent tasks first and then the low-priority ones. Assign time frames dedicated solely for each particular task.

7. Think positively at all times. Maintain mental discipline by not allowing thoughts of failure into your head.

8. Keep Your Mind In The Present. Winners maintain mental focus in the present. The here and now is where you perform, not the regrets of the past or the uncertainty of the future. Focus on what you are doing, when you do it.

You can keep your mind in the present by concentrating fully on the task at hand while you are performing it. In order to improve your concentration while performing tasks, check out my articles:
a) Improve concentration
b) How to produce excellent work

If you are focused on the present, you can avoid fears and doubts.

9. Focus on the task and not the outcome. Achievers keep their eye on the journey and not the goal. Having objectives is helpful, but when you execute, stay focused on the process. You cannot completely control the outcome as it can depend on many other factors, some of which may not be in your hands. (Remember tip#3).

10. Enjoy yourself: Relaxation is important if you want to perform any task well. If you are stressed out, then you may not be able to give your 100%. So enjoy the task you are doing, and you will feel relaxed and enthusiastic about it. See my article : How to produce excellent work, for more information on how relaxation can improve quality of work.

11. Water bottle. Eight glasses of water a day are recommended by experts. Keep a bottle at your desk to stay hydrated and avoid fatigue and sluggishness—two major signs of dehydration.

12. Tea. The most consumed beverage in the world, tea can increase energy, stimulate brain activity and increase information retention.

13. Healthy snacks. Keep some healthy food at your desk for days when you can’t dash out for lunch. Some good snacks include: cereal bars, dried fruit, pudding.

14. Learn tips to manage stress. We all have to face stressful situations at one time or the other. People who can nicely manage stress levels, do what is needed to be done while staying calm and composed under pressure will most likely overcome obstacles in their way to achieve worthwhile success. How to produce excellent work

Do you want to get excellent results, no matter what work you are doing?

Do you want your work to be great?

The following tips should help in improving the quality of your performance and producing splendid work:

1. Love what you do or do what you love:
This article points out the importance of doing what you love: The only way to do great work is to love what you do

Deep interest in something will help you concentrate better in order to perform better.

2.Give full concentration:
You must give full concentration to any work you are doing in order to perform better in it. Become fully involved in it. Some tips to improve your concentration are: improve concentration

3.Be relaxed, comfortable:
In order to produce great work, it is important that you be relaxed. Being relaxed helps you in paying more attention to your work, having better concentration, being fully alert and having clear thinking. In order to be relaxed you need to love what you are doing(as mentioned in point#1). Having a deep interest in something helps in feeling comfortable and paying more attention to it.

4.Get as much knowledge about it as possible:
Whatever it is that you are attempting to do, try to gain as much knowledge as possible about the task you are performing. With increased knowledge, you will feel more comfortable. You may also gain new interest in the work which inturn helps your concentration.

All the points mentioned here are inter-related and one thing can lead to another. With knowledge you may find your anxieties about the task vanishing. Read more about this here: overcome fears through knowledge.

5. Practice:
If you want to become a master at anything, you need to keep practicing it till you become comfortable doing it and your performance improves. So another important means of achieving
excellence in your work is through gaining knowledge and implementation of that knowledge by continued practice.

As I mentioned earlier, all the above points are related to each other. Following one point should naturally lead to others atleast to some extent. You can notice how loving your work can naturally result in more concentration; how being relaxed can also improve concentration levels; how gaining knowledge can help in building interest about a particular task; how loving something can help in making us relaxed while doing it and so on.

You might like to try following all the above tips and keep at them till you see marked improvement in your work performance.

How to handle challenges

Alan Downs, in his book The Fearless Executive, mentions this technique for overcoming fears, handling challenges and going after your goals:

Identify the smallest unit of task you can manage with regards to your goal. Then do it. He gives the following example - suppose you are asked to evaluate and prepare a report of all 2,000 stores of your company.

Break the task down into the smallest unit that you feel comfortable in accomplishing. It could be the evaluation of a single store or a small district of stores. You decide for yourself. While doing the smallest manageable task, give it your complete focus and energy. Then move on to the next task.

This is one of the best and most effective ways of pursuing your goals. I had mentioned this same principle in my previous post - Easy way to achieve goals
I am mentioning this same principle again in order to stress its importance as has been very nicely described by Alan Downs in the book.

Are you aware of Alcoholics Anonymous? They use "just for today" technique to overcome drinking habit. They just focus on giving up alcohol one day at a time.

So what's the big challenge that is haunting you?
In the words of Alan Downs : "Stop focusing on the whole of it and focus on one small part that you can do. When you are finished with that, focus only on another part. " Well said Mr. Downs.

Tackling a task step by step can be an excellent strategy for getting things done quickly and efficiently. You need high energy to go through your day and complete important tasks. If you feel low on energy or feel sleepy or lethargic during your day, then you need to check out this resource - 4 Step Sleep Plan for High Energy : Sleep less and have more energy. Be active all day

Stress can be a big hurdle to overcome while doing tasks. Fear of not being able to complete things on time, fear of boss or whatever fear and axiety you feel, can serve as a block to doing things properly. You need to find out ways to handle stress, let go of fears, be positive and focus on the task. If you ever feel anxiety and feel at a loss to control it, then you might find this resource extremely helpful. Do check it out - Anxiety and panic reduction

8 rules for writing well

Earlier I had written an article about 6 step strategy for writing anything faster and more effectively. You may read about it here: How to write well.

Now that you have a simple strategy for writing, let us consider some points which make a good writing. William N.Yeomans, in his book 1000 things you never learned in business school mentions 8 rules for good writing. They are as follows:

  1. Write with the reader in mind
  2. Decide what your purpose is.
  3. Say exactly what you mean.
  4. Keep it as short as possible.
  5. Make your point in the first paragraph.
  6. Use a format that guides the reader.
  7. Write fast - build your writing speed.
  8. Arouse the reader's interest.

The above rules can apply to writing a letter, memo, report or even an article. Before we even begin writing, we need to do these two important things:

1.Ask ourselves :"Who are my readers?" and "How can I write so that they relate to it?"

2. The next thing to do before putting a word on the paper is to make clear the objective we want to achieve while writing. We may do this by writing down :"I hope, as a result of reading this, my reader will ______________________________________________" .
Now fill in the blank with an appropriate response desired from your reader.

There are more important points covered in the section 'How to write well' from the book 1000 things you never learned in business school

Though the author mentions the points with regards to business communication like writing memos, letters, reports etc. they can be applicable to other forms of writing as well. You may want to read the book even if you are not interested in business communications and specially so if you are interested in business communication. The book covers more aspects of business besides communication.

Improving vocabulary skill: Vocabulary building activity

Having a good vocabulary is very important as it assists in communicating your ideas properly. If you want to write or speak well then you have to concentrate on increasing vocabulary. The more command you have over words, the better can be your writing or speech.

It is recommended to focus on and devote some time regularly to expand your vocabulary. Here are just a few ways you can increase your vocabulary:

1. If you are unsure of any word, you encounter while reading or speaking to someone, refer the dictionary. Constantly referring the dictionary is a good habit.

2. Read extensively. Read a lot and whenever you come up with any word you are not familiar with, look up its meaning in the dictionary. Its advice-able to do this for every new word you encounter, even if you have to do this for 20 words per page. You may write down the meanings near the words in the book itself with a pencil.

3. While looking up a word in the dictionary, also see its pronunciation and proper usage with the help of an example sentence. Most good dictionaries do provide an example or two for each word.

4. Also look up the synonyms and antonyms for the word. By noting down the synonyms you can expand your vocabulary further and it also helps to avoid repeating the same word while speaking or writing as you can include its alternatives if you have to say the word more than once in a sentence or paragraph.

5. Crossword puzzles, scrabble and other word games can be helpful for increasing your vocabulary.

How to make visitors stay longer at your blog

Do you want visitors to stay longer at your blog and browse through more pages? If so, then consider the following suggestions :

1. Provide valuable content:
This is a no-brainer and is the first and foremost condition to make people want to stay longer at your site and even come back to it later. If they are fed with rubbish, it takes them less than a second to close down your site window or browse to some other hopefully better site.

Before posting any article on your blog, ask yourself : "What benefit does this post provide to my readers?" Then make sure your post provides the desired benefit to your readers. Keep doing this for some time and soon your blog may get a very loyal fan following.

2. Related Articles:
After good content, the next important thing would be to make your site easy to navigate so that people don't find visiting your site too inconvenient.

One thing I have done at my blog is to add 'Related Articles' section at the end of each of my blog posts. Earlier I did not make use of this technique but am happy with the results after this change.

Make a list of 4-5 similar or related articles from your own blog and provide links to each, at the end of all your articles. This list would provide useful direction to the user.

Rather than depend on the visitors to navigate your site by themselves, take them by the hand and guide them to areas of their interest.

3. Have more categories (tags):
If you look at the right hand side of my blog, you can see a list of categories. Try to make this list big so that people can easily find articles of their interest. Having more categories can improve the navigability of your site and save valuable time of your site visitors.

4. Have more specific tags:
While naming your categories (tags), be as specific as possible. Earlier I used to have a tag named 'self-improvement', but later I began to be more specific in naming my categories.

I still have self-improvement tag, but I also have further tags like 'people skills', 'stress', 'sleep n energy', 'success', 'writing n blogging', 'learning tips', 'public speaking' etc.

Instead of having 100+ articles under 'self-improvement', you now would have a few articles under specific sub-categories making it easier for site visitors to find articles of their interest.

Have more categories(as mentioned in tip #3 above) and be specific in labeling them. You can also make use of tag clouds to attract reader attention, like the one I have at the bottom of this blog. You may generate tag clouds free of cost through sites such as : www.zoomclouds.com, www.tagcloud.com

5. Involve the reader:
Make your site interactive by getting readers more involved while they are reading your articles. You can increase reader involvement by asking questions or getting the reader to think about a topic. You may have discussions on your site, encourage comments from readers and reply to those comments.

One more feature you can add to your blog that increases user involvement is to ask them to rate your articles on a scale of 1-5. You can install this rating feature for free from the site: www.blogarate.com You may notice that at the end of all my articles, there is an icon called 'Rate it'. Just click on any of the star to give your desired rating for my articles.

6. External links in new window:
You may want to provide links to other websites so that readers can get additional information about a topic. External links can be helpful in adding additional value to your content by pointing visitors in a useful direction. However, on my blog, I usually make external links open in a new window so that people do not leave my site even while browsing the other webpage.

7. Faster Loading:
One more important factor for your blog or website is the time-factor. Your site should not take forever to load up. Visitors may just not have the time, patience or the inclination to wait. I personally don't like sites which take a long time to load up due to heavy graphics and stuff present.

As far as I am concerned, a clean professional look and valuable content are far more important than catchy designs or heavy graphics. By no means am I suggesting to keep your site dull. Infact a good looking site can attract people. But do not over-do it.

The above tips may be helpful in making your visitors stay longer at your site. You may not notice dramatic results, but there should hopefully be satisfactory improvements after implementing these strategies.

Which of the above strategies were you already using on your blog or website and what has been the result of using that strategy?

The easy way to achieve goals

The easiest way to achieve goals is to break them down into small parts which you can do easily. If you have any goal which you feel difficult to achieve, it is important that you break it down so that it becomes more manageable for you.

If you don't break down goals into smaller parts, then you are likely to feel a lot of difficulty in going after them, and there will be a risk of giving it up soon if you encounter a lot of initial obstacles.

That is why break each big goal into small parts. While breaking down goals, make sure that each part is easy for you to do. You should feel and believe that you can achieve this particular part easily.

If after breaking down a goal into a smaller parts, you still don't completely feel you can achieve a particular task with ease then you need to break it down even further till you absolutely feel confident of achieving it with ease .

This is very important - you should feel the task you are going to attempt is easy to do. If you consider it difficult, then break the task down more and more till it becomes easy. In this way you will face a relatively difficult task in small steps rather than all at once, so that it now becomes easy for you.

Once you have successfully completed one step, go to the next step. Consider achieving your goals as step by step process with each preceding step leading to the next one.

Successfully completing a task, no matter how small it is, would increase your confidence. You can now attempt the next task with more confidence than before and so on.

Instead of attempting to eat the whole meal in one big gulp, it is better to eat it in smaller bites which are easier to swallow. Likewise is the case with setting and achieving goals: divide your goals into smaller parts and make sure each part is something which you feel easy to do.

All the best!

How to get the most out of a good book

There are many good books out there and some of them contain a lot of useful information. Are there any strategies you can use to derive maximum benefit out of a book? I am presenting below a few strategies which have been useful to me:

Read it more than once:
If the advice given in a book is good, it helps to read it more than once, even several times. The first time you may miss some important tips. It helps to develop the habit of reading good stuff several times before putting down the book.

Sometimes it is better to read a good book many times over than reading several different books.

Concentrate properly while reading:
The following exercise should help you read with more concentration. Every time you finish reading a page, stop and recall what you have read. Then take a look at the page to see if you have missed some points while recalling. If you keep doing this, soon you may develop strong concentration skills so that you don't miss much while reading.

Highlight useful points:
Whenever you come across any point which you think might be useful, underline it with a pencil. After finishing the book, you may want to go through the highlighted texts again to remind yourself of the important stuff in the book.

Write down some notes:
In addition to underlining points in the book, you can write down notes in your own words about what you have understood about a particular tip, suggestion or topic. This will not only confirm whether you have understood the point clearly or not, it will also help you in remembering it better because of repetition.

Act on it:
Finally, the most important point to get the maximum benefit out of any book is to act on the good advice presented in it. Unless you implement what you have read, you cannot get true benefit out of any book, no matter how good it is.

An effective way to solve problems

One of the best ways to solve problems is by writing them down. When you write down a problem and some possible solutions, you can get more ideas than you previously had. You may gain better clarity about the problem and new ideas can pop into your head.

The process is simple - just make the habit of writing down any problem, goal, your to-do list etc. One more advantage of writing is that you can overcome the problem of forgetting as important things might slip away from your mind when you are involved in some other activity.

Writing about your goals, problems and their possible solutions also helps you in focusing better and hence you can make more mature and intelligent decisions.

Just take a pencil and paper and start jotting down any thoughts you have about the problem at hand. You should write whatever you are thinking and not think about what to write. This is the most important point to remember.

Keep writing down all thoughts you have in your mind about a problem. After a few minutes of writing, you may feel much better about the problem as you have uncluttered your mind by putting your thoughts on paper.

If you were previously confused about the problem, your confusion may have lifted a little bit or you may have got some new ideas to try out for overcoming the problem. Keep adding to these notes if new thoughts about the problem arise.

A final piece of advice:
Think about some current problem in your life which you may have been trying to solve from some time. Try writing it down on a piece of paper or open a word processing document and start typing away. You may be surprised at how much more effective this is than just trying to solve it in your head.

How to make sure your business proposal is heard by the other person

Here is a very important tip when you are going to present a business proposal to someone or while trying to make a sale.

Suppose you are meeting the manager of a company to present your business proposal to him or to explain about your product, make sure that you do not start your presentation before you are properly seated with him in his office.

If you become hasty and impatient and try to start your speech as soon as you meet the manager while standing or walking with him, it gives the impression that you are being too eager, overly excited or it may provide the impression that you do not value your own proposal much. How many salesmen do exactly this - they start pitching people even before the handshake is complete.

Make sure that you and the manager are seated properly in his office, relax for a couple of seconds before you begin your speech. This way you are showing that what you are going to present is important and valuable.

If during your speech, you find the manager getting disinterested and if he starts doing some other work like signing papers or looking at some object or studying some paper, stop yourself from going any further. Stop as long as its necessary to get back his attention.

If you continue your speech while he is busy with something else, there might be the risk of him missing some important piece of information which could be useful in you getting the deal. So, make sure that he hears everything you are saying. When he starts doing something else, stop your speech. He will notice it and re-focus his attention on you.

If he asks you to continue while he is doing some thing else saying that he is listening to you, do not oblige to his request. In this case you can politely ask him to finish his work then you will continue further.

Tell him that you do not mind waiting for him to finish his work so that you have his undivided attention. Such a statement should immediately catch his attention and he will likely feel that you value your proposal too much to just let it finish without bothering if someone is paying attention to it or not.

Imagine the effect it is going to have on him when he realizes how serious you are about your proposal and also imagine the opposite effect it will have if you just blabber without observing whether anybody is really listening to you or not.
